October 20, 2008

DUSTY

Well, maybe I wish it were otherwise, but I personally still have a sense of shame; I still think I KNOW scandal when I see it, but the thing that scares hell out of me is the scandal most current in America , which is the scariest scandal in American history…the death of scandal in America.

I remember reading an article in the NY Times entitled “The Death of Scandal” and I remembered how shocked I was to read—and agree with it. The muckraking writer at the time was writing how appalled he was back in 1990-something at Congress’ voting itself a 20-percent pay raise during the worst recession since the “Great Depression.” He dubbed this the “death of scandal” because none of his fellow writers or talking TV heads were raising hell about the shameful event. And it was shameful. And they (Congressmen) got away with it. Why do I say that? (1) Because they weren’t impeached… any more than we’ll impeach our nominal “representatives” for (in addition to doing the same thing this past year) the recent bailout which was a case of grand larceny, treason, compounded by the pork barrel aggravation of the primary felony, and (more importantly) (2) because you (reader) very likely don’t recall the event (the pay raise).

Today two things made me feel that scandal in America is not only dead, but quite possibly (and according to Pulitzer Prize columnist Leonard Pitts—see below) buried for good. Today I received in the mail a piece of McCain propaganda claiming Obama was in conspiracy with Ayers’ bombing our nation’s capitol. I won’t debate that claim and thereby lend it any dignity. It is an outright lie. Lies told by politicians are under American law “privileged” – Obama is a public figure and therefore cannot sue McCain for publishing falsehoods unless he can prove actual malice. I think he could, but the lies McCain is pouring on Obama through malicious campaign managers are like rapid fire from a Bonsai machine-gun nest on Iwo Jima.

The second thing I encounter as a clear and certain nail in scandal’s coffin is Leonard Pitt’s article saying precisely that. His subject is not one lie in particular that our governing administration has launched, but rather a listing of the lies that inductively establishes that the Bush administration and his corporate commanders do little else but lie to us…to the paralyzing point that we are, as a people, now insensitive to the fact that LIES HAVE BECOME… “NORMAL” NOW IN AMERICA.

Before I resume my lament for the demise of truth and scandal in America, I give you the eulogy of Leonard Pitts, hopefully to be followed (after my amens) by the further lamentations of our own resident Historian and Philosopher, Leonard Carrier.

LEONARD PITTS’ LAMENT:

“THE NEW NORMAL”

Leonard Pitts Jr.: The new normal

Tuesday, October 21, 2008

Meanwhile, back at the War on Terror …

You remember the War on Terror, don’t you? It was in all the papers. Back before presidential politics sucked the air from the room and your 401(k) shrank till it was worth maybe dinner and a movie, it was considered quite the important news story. Abu Ghraib? Extraordinary renditions? Fight ‘em over there so we don’t have to fight ‘em over here? Surely you recall.

I only ask because of a news story that broke last week to a yawn of media disinterest. The Washington Post reported on two secret White House memos explicitly endorsing the use of waterboarding – simulated drowning — on so-called high-value terrorism suspects. This is, says The Post, the first time the still-classified memos have been disclosed. They were written in response to requests from then-CIA Director George Tenet, who worried his agents might be hung out to dry if the practice were discovered and the people or their representatives demanded someone’s head.

According to The Post, the White House issued written authorizations in 2003 and 2004. Yet in 2006, President Bush told the nation, “The United States does not torture. It’s against our laws, and it’s against our values. I have not authorized it — and I will not authorize it.”

Which was, of course, a lie.

You’d think the latest proof of that lie — yet another smoking gun to stack with all the others — would merit attention. But a computer search on Thursday turned up only seven newspaper stories mentioning the memos. Searches of the CNN and FOX news Web sites also came up dry, though the story did appear on MSNBC’s site.

If you think my point is that the media missed an important story, it isn’t. No, the point is that normal is not where we thought it would be.

You remember how it was just after Sept. 11, 2001, right? Some of us vowed we would never enter a skyscraper again. Some of us didn’t want to leave our houses again. The minutiae of popular culture became staggeringly unimportant. Humorists like David Letterman and my colleague, Dave Barry, wondered if they could ever return to the business of laughter.

We were scared dry. And some of us said: Get used to it. This was the new normal.

But skyscrapers did not close from lack of use. We did not become a nation of agoraphobics. We did not lose our interest in singers and movie stars. Messrs. Letterman and Barry went back to work.

Fear, which had cut through us like a hot poker, became instead a low-grade fever, ambient noise, wallpaper, something you feel without feeling, hear without hearing, see without seeing.

Then you look up one day and realize how profoundly that fear has changed your world. People are imprisoned without charges or access to attorneys and it’s routine. People are surveilled, their reading habits studied, their telephone usage logged and it’s commonplace. People, including children, end up on a secret list of those who are not allowed to fly, nobody will tell you why, there is no appeal and it’s ordinary. We swallow lies like candy, nod sagely at babblespeak and it’s unexceptional.

Torture is inflicted with White House approval, the president lies about it and it’s just another Tuesday.

Once upon a time, Americans were fond of looking upon backward nations, upon places where law was whatever the king said it was, and noting with pride that we do things differently in our country. But that was a day long ago and a country long gone.

If we miss the one or mourn the other, you’d never know it to look at us. We live through what feels evermore like a Joe McCarthy fever dream. We feel without feeling, hear without hearing, see without seeing and do not protest what we have become.

Because this is normal now.

Bush—it turns out– was referring to two tractor-trailers obtained by U.S. forces in Iraq. The CIA and the Defense Intelligence Agency had concluded these vehicles were mobile bio-weapons plants. Yet they had found not a trace of biological agents on either. No one has been charged for these lies on the basis of which war was waged and continues to be waged, and no one has been fired, much less impeached for this treason. Well, Colin Powel, sick of his complicity in the lies did in fact quit…which I say is the clearest ever case of “too little and too late” and that any self-respecting national warrior would have fallen on his own sword for the lies he spoke as America’s representative in the United Nations’ Security Council on the eve of war.

EFFECT: We are conned into supporting the mythological war on terror in Afghanistan and Iraq that has killed over a half million people over the past 7 years, increased terrorism globally and locally (in the two countries the U.S. preemptively invaded) and has created the trillion-dollar drain on the U.S. economy which has bankrupted America and brought us to the brink of a global economic collapse and depression.

This was a lie almost as big as “WMD’s and Al Qaeda Connections” and twice as skillful. But your argument is unsound and fatally flawed and logically absurd…but no one seems to get the joke…so I’ll tell it in a simpler (if slightly ribald) way:

PORNOGRAPHIC PROOF OF SURGE LIE . . .

It’s like–in the course of a forceful rape–the rapist begins to shout, “This is really going well…She is losing her will and ability to fight me off; You see what I told you when I started this thing! It was so dark, I thought it was my wife. Then, when I jumped on her, I still thought it was her because of all that shock and awe my wife always puts up when I surprise her like that…with the favor of my affections. Then, when things got going, I realized it was not my wife, but rather her sister, who came to babysit because my wife was at her mother’s. But BECAUSE as we were already into the thing, and BECAUSE as I realized that my wife’s sister was frigid and clearly needed to learn the fine art of healthy heterosexuality—which is the kind of sexuality I do so well—I realized that it was in everyone’s best interests that I continue doing what I had started until she learned what she needed to know. I will always maintain that this was not no rape, no how! She had no right to resist my teaching her what she needed to learn. And now I can prove I was right. When I had the courage just now to step up the pace of our carnal….coalition, she clearly lowered her resistance to me. Her fingernails are no longer digging into my eyes or my neck; the bleeding is almost stopped and she has totally quit that awful screaming. I have increased my pace and rest my case. Take this to the jury room with you now… because it’s my last and final Johnny Cochran word on the serious subject of sexual resurgence and surge: “ When there ain’t no squeal, the rape ain’t real. Yeaaaaaaa….Surge !!! ” [that last triple exclamation point indicates an ejaculatory declaration for those of you numbed and dumbed-down enough to believe the other lies I just told].

The preceding lies (political and pornographic) listed are to me simply the ones that come immediately to mind. The Bush administration has been telling lies like this on a daily basis for the past 8 years. What effect has this had on America?…Hearing the lies, having the facts of those lies laid out before them for nearly a decade, during which NO ONE HAS BEEN PUNISHED FOR THOSE LIES except a few isolated murderers and torturers tossed out of the U.S. Armed Forces by war monger brass as sacrificial pawns in the lying game. Everyone knows that the “go ahead” for torturing prisoners went right up to and into the White House.

NOW…

THE LIE OF “GUILT BY ASSOCIATION”

The oldest form of lying and character assassination is the gambit of “guilt by association”. It’s illegal under American criminal law—which requires the state to prove that the accused actually “helped” his criminal friend with the criminal enterprise. McCain and Palin make no pretense of claiming Obama encouraged or took part in any of his friends’ alleged mistakes or transgressions. They ask you to condemn Obama because he befriended them or “associated” with them. Those claiming to be among the “born-again” Christian “right” are hypocritically not telling us to love our enemies and at the same time, they are telling us that befriending (loving) a criminal makes one a criminal. Christ not only associated with and forgave criminals, he did so in their company on Golgotha and with his last breath. Who among us has not had one of our friends or associates breach some law or accepted moral code? But what is illegal in criminal law is the rule in politics: It’s the oldest legal weapon in the coward’s arsenal, and our presidential contenders, McCain and Palin in their desperate and hopefully dying effort to catch up with Obama in the polls are spreading lies just for that reason—They are inveterate cowards. They are abandoning the battle of issues and policies and launching a battle of hatred. They are hatefully spreading lies suggesting Obama is guilty because he has associated with allegedly guilty people—not because he aided or participated in any guilty conduct. That is not only a lie, and now only a cowardly lie, it is—quite clearly—anti-American. The question that remains, however is much more daunting – Has America changed its conceptions of “right and wrong” or simply discarded them? Have “lies” told in America about Americans to Americans become the new “norm” ? Have we decided as a people that “truth” is just another disposable pawn in the “game” of politics? Have we arrived at Orwell’s point of democracy’s demise – 1984, the year of Big Brother’s dictatorship constructed on the platform of the Big Lie?

Leonard Pitts thinks America is incurably conned; that we’ve been lied to so much that “lies” have become perceived by our masses as “normal” instead of “scandal”.

My jury on this question is still out. I’m still holding out hope (which no longer rises to the dignity of “belief”) that America will wake up, smell the coffee, remember the tea, and ultimately recall what it was like short decades ago when two brave reporters probed and dug in the loam of truth in the Beltway deeply enough to prove that a U.S. President had committed crime and lied to us about it…and when as a result, there were actual consequences of that scandal…consequences which involved accountability and a changing of our nation’s leadership.

Nixon’s crimes of petty burglary and cover-up do not compare in degree of criminality to the high crimes and misdemeanors (major international war crimes, crimes against environmental nature, and domestic crimes, compounded by lies to cover up those crimes) committed by our incumbent President and his administration…so many crimes that Americans seem to be now sufficiently numbed and dumbed down to accept more lies as a “normal” matter of American political course.

Has America become the proverbial “frog in the pot” of tepid water, which when warmed at the deceptively slow rate of one degree per minute, becomes lethally boiling before the frog realizes he has sat on his haunches so long he has lost the ability to leap for his…life?

Obama is offering us our only chance for change—a CONCEIVABLY LAST CHANCE–to save ourselves from the waters about to boil us into oblivion as a leader among free nations. Our nation under the leadership of the Republican Neo-Cons has been lied to to the point it is questionable whether “we-the-people” consider lies anything more than “normal politics”. If McCain and Palin win, there will be categorical and catastrophic proof that we have been dumbed and numbed down to that languishing level.

God help us if Leonard Pitts is right.

Indeed, why do foreign news agencies have to tell us what’s going on in our own country? Just recently the British announced that their economy is in recession; whereas, we keep hearing that “maybe” our own country might be heading there. What? With foreclosures mounting, the auto industry languishing, and unemployment at more than 6%, is our government trying to tell us that we’re not in recession when we’ve been in one for months? You would think that U.S. news agencies would be as honest as the ones in the U.K., but that’s not what we get from our mainstream media. They eagerly publish the lies spewing from our present government, but refuse to refute these lies except maybe on the back pages of subsequent issues of the newspapers.

Is Leonard Pitts correct in saying that lying has become the norm, and that scandal has died in this country? I prefer to think it’s not so. I think that the majority of people in this country hate what’s been going on for the past eight years and can’t wait to replace the corrupt, lying, utterly contemptible Bush administration with an honest one that ministers to the needs of the American people and not to the greed of the wealthiest among us. Of course, 24% of our citizens still support the policies of George W. Bush; but that was about the percentage of those who supported the Tories during our American Revolution. There will always be those who, for one reason or another, just don’t “get it”—the holocaust deniers, the global warming deniers, the Sarah Palin lovers, the Muslim haters, the racists and the fear-mongers who show us daily just what we need to overcome.

In speaking about the “death of scandal,” I was reminded of a bit in the film, “The Duchess,” which portrayed the life of the Duchess of Devonshire in the late 18th century. The Duke of Devonshire was one of the most powerful men in England at the time, a philandering plutocrat who could make or break the careers of aspiring politicians in the Whig Party. Because the Duchess—immensely popular with the poets, politicians, and playwrights—could not openly criticize the Duke for his adulterous ways, she conspired with the playwright, Richard Sheridan, to have his play, “A School for Scandal,” performed before the Duke and others. Everyone knew that the play was about the scandalous behavior of the Duke, and that this was the way the Duchess chose to broadcast her complaints to everyone. What I am suggesting is that our mainstream press has become an exercise in “a school for scandal.” With the main newspaper and broadcasting outlets being controlled by the wealthiest among us—just as the Duke of Devonshire “controlled” what was said about him—what we have at our disposal are a myriad of “Duchesses” who are forced to get out the facts by other means. This, of course, is what Leonard Pitts does in his columns; and it is what Dusty Schoch and I do on this site, and it is what Daily Kos, Mother Jones, and Arianna Huffington do on the internet. The internet can’t be controlled, just as the playwrights and poets can’t be controlled. That’s why Plato, the consummate elitist, wanted the poets banned from his Utopian Republic.

I say, never ban the poets, never fail to point out that the Emperor wears no clothes. The American public might not look as if it is paying attention, but I am confident that it is. I see November 5 dawning as a new chapter in our Republic, one in which the old rubbish is swept out, and new policies adopted that will once again show that the United States, after waking from a long nightmare, is ready to fulfill our fondest dreams.

Very well argued. I can’t offer any disagreement.

My only question is how one gets this message out to all those Americans who just don’t care. Francine Prose, in a recent article in Harpers (or maybe New Yorker) took on the huge public outcry when several books purported to be memoir turned out to be fiction. A reading public aghast at the lies! But F. Prose wonders why those lies make more impact than the giant lies of the administration, lies with horrible consequences. She concludes that the public feels helpless before the powers-that-be, thus turns its frustration and anger at lies on the insignificant fake memoirists. A scapegoating, I guess.

All well and good to try and educate this tuned-out public to the real LIES, but I think a number of people (all frustrating when I run into them) don’t want to know the truth. Would rather believe than reason out; believe that huge government lies are only truths too complicated for them to understand and that big-kind-daddy-in-charge will make it all right by the end of the day. That they are free to pursue their daily lives without needing to bother their pretty little heads about “all that “political stuff.” And that’s why I’m glad we’ve had this Wall Street crash, because it starts to disturb these tuned-out Americans as it impinges on their daily lives.

Democrats Ignore HR 333 call

To Impeach Bush

Isn’t this in itself TREASON?

DW In-House Historian and Philosopher,

Leonard Carrier says…

Yes! IT’S A FACT, but members of Congress who won’t support Dennis Kucinich’s HR 333 to impeach Dick Cheney are simply playing politics. They think they won’t get re-elected unless they just stand on the sidelines and let Bush and Cheney continue their self-destructive ways. The fact that they might also be complicit in an attack on Iran doesn’t seem to faze them.

Here were the reasons offered by Debbie Wasserman-Schultz (FL, Dist. 20) for saying impeachment wasn’t a good idea. Ms. Wasserman-Schultz is on the House Judiciary Committee and speaks for Nancy Pelosi. First, she says that we have to concentrate on getting out of Iraq. This is sheer blather. She and other Democrats still keep funding the war. Second, she says that there are more important things to do. This is absurd. It is not more important to set up investigative committees than it is to protect our Constitution. Third, she says that the press would “have a field day” in publicizing impeachment proceedings, crowding out all other news. Well, why not? What more important things do the media have to do, besides spreading “feel good” propaganda from the White House? Last, she says that Americans don’t want to have impeachment hearings conducted. She should fire her poll-takers. Most Americans want to know the facts behind Cheney’s and Bush’s lies to the American public so they could go to war and thus curtail our Constitutional liberties. If Wasserman-Schultz can’t read our citizenry any better than this, she should resign from office immediately.

It seems clear that the Democrats in Congress who don’t support impeachment are the “money” Democrats, those who put the interests of corporations and economic globalization ahead of the interests of the people. These are the ones who secretly want to keep those military bases in Iraq, and who want U.S. corporations to profit from stealing Iraqi oil. They want to be known as being “tough on terror,” when all this really means is adopting an “imperialist lite” view of how to conduct foreign relations, speaking out against Bush and Cheney, but still wanting to do the same thing, only better.

When Bush and Cheney threatened Iran with military force, what did Congress do to blunt this irrationality? Pelosi wanted to pass a House resolution to denounce our NATO ally Turkey for genocide–something that occurred in 1915! Hillary Clinton voted to declare Iran’s Republican Guard–part of the Iranian army–as a terrorist organization! Senator Charles Schumer voted to confirm Mukasey as Attorney General, even though Mukasey doesn’t know what torture is! If progressives have to confront this sort of mentality in leading members of the Democratic Party, it’s going to be a long, uphill struggle.

Let’s make sure we keep that old aphorism (the one Bush continues to mutter but always mangles it) in mind— “Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me three times, shame on ….US!”

We let ourselves and our Congressmen get sucked into wars we’re now clearly losing both in Afghanistan and Iraq because we fell asleep at the switch and didn’t bother to question what the Neo-cons were telling us to make us think this “war on terror” was a “mission possible” in terms of waging pre-emptive war against sovereign Islamic nations, when terror is a tactic and not a corporeal enemy, much less an enemy state.

We can hear the sabers rattling more menacingly every day, and the fascist neo-cons are carefully constructing more mythology to justify yet another invasion in the Middle East. This time, let’s urge our Congressmen to nip it before it buds. If we don’t, it will certainly be primarily our fault.

Senator James Webb and Rep. Mark Udall have introduced a bill, S. 759 / H.R. 3119, to prevent President Bush from attacking Iran without Congressional authorization.

You can use the tool (web link) below—quite easily–to ask your Senators and Representative to support this legislation.

Also, please ask your Senators and Representative to oppose over $90 million for rapid development and deployment of a 30,000-lb “bunker buster” (called the Massive Ordinance Penetrator) that many fear the administration might want to use against Iran.

By: Joseph Cione *

Last March 27, I celebrated the 60th anniversary of my arrival in the United States, and on the 31st of the same month I was delighted to celebrate my 55th year as citizen. Today, as it was then, I can say proudly and loudly that I am privileged to be a citizen of this generous, noble and marvelous land, where people from every part of the world have continually come in search of a better life.

In the last 60 years I have seen many elected presidents come and go. Some were great; most of them were good and a few turned out to be unworthy of the honor or plain incompetent. Presently, the United States of America is under the spell of its 41st president : George W. Bush, who has been occupying the White House for the last six years, going on seven. During this time, Mr. Bush has chosen to carry out his many duties and responsibilities tightly wrapped within a thick cloud of partisan secrecy and a stubborn attachment to personal beliefs often expressed with a tinge of Texan sarcasm and a conspicuous disdain for the rules of the English grammar.

But that’s the least of Mr. Bush’s problems. His main problem is the quality of his character. So far, he has shown to be a bullheaded individual who does not seem to have any difficulty manipulating the truth to his advantage. He also seems to believe that the meaning of justice is totally dependent on a particular success that one wishes to achieve. In other words, if it works, the aim must be “just”. For Mr. Bush, justice has a physical, palpable component that has very little to do with moral consciousness. Perhaps, the facts listed below will describe Mr. Bush’s character traits more clearly than I could:

    1. The number of dead American soldiers in Iraq is increasing each month. They’ll be 4,000 by the end of the year. The wounded soldiers are over 20,000, half of whom are permanently disabled. The casualties among the people of Iraq are said to be over 50,000 dead and many more wounded. This number includes innocent men, women and children. Iraq’s infrastructure has been severely damaged, and the life of its citizens adversely affected.

    2. As far as the military victory that Mr. Bush has been stubbornly adamant about and still is, no one believes it anymore. The lies that Mr. Bush and his friends have continually disseminated during the last several years have seemingly begun to come home to roost. A number of Mr. Bush’s staunch friends and allies have moved away from their servile allegiance to their leader and have begun to adopt a more independent posture on the subject of the Iraq war. Some of them who aspire to the 2008 presidential election have begun to criticize publicly Mr. Bush’s stubborn stance and illogical points of view.

    3. Mr. Bush after the “victory” of the year 2000 presidential election declared that he would use all his energy to unite the country. ”I would be a ‘uniter’”- he said. He proceeded to achieve the opposite. Our country, in fact, has never been more disunited than it is today. Since when have we had a Red America and a Blue America? I don’t recall any other president who has had the gall to say publicly: “If you are not with me you are against me?” I remember very vividly, during my life in Italy, that Benito Mussolini used the same expression to remind us of his dictatorial rights. What’s Bush’s excuse? Is it possible that in the midst of his mental confusion, Mr. Bush has completely forgotten that we are a free and democratic country?

4.Those in the Federal Bureaus who are responsible for the health of the United States’ economy, are presently saying that the economy is in good shape, the inflation is minimal and the number of those out of work is manageable. Meanwhile the U.S foreign rate deficit has reached billions of dollars as thousands of jobs are being out-sourced regularly. The rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. In fact, Mr. Bush, as soon as he became president, got hold of the billions in surplus money he had received from the outgoing Clinton administration, and without hesitation, he distributed, as a tax deduction, 80% of it to 15% of the population–those who earned more than $ 200,000 a year, the billionaires, the steady contributors and the generous friends. The 85% of the population, on the other hand, had to be satisfied with the remaining 20% of the surplus. Meanwhile, in the Congress, the Republican members made sure that the minimum hourly wage of $ 5.25 would never be increased. Thanks to the Democrats’ majority in Congress, the minimum hourly wage was recently increased to $ 7.25.

The National Debt has risen to approximately eight trillions. The Consumer Debt (credit cards and car loans) has hit a record $ 2.6 trillion. A gallon of gasoline costs now more that $ 3.00. Mr. Bush does not seem to worry about it. He and his friends are getting richer by the hour. Ask the EXXON’s CEO about the company’s profits. It couldn’t be any better.

    5. Ever since Mr. Bush, with the blessings of his cronies, Cheney and Rumfeld, decided to thumb his nose at the United Nations organization and all its members, the word “arrogant” became a label that the rest of the world loved to staple on the forehead of Mr. Bush and the country that he represents. Mr. Bush told the whole world that he decided to invade Iraq because Saddam Hussein had WMDs and was ready to use them against the U.S.. As we all know today, Bush had lied through his teeth. Then, when it became evident to him that the WMD fable was no longer believable and acceptable as a valid excuse for the invasion, Mr. Bush and his cronies changed the tune. The invasion was necessary, they began to blare away for all to hear, because Saddam Hussein was a cruel dictator who had abused his own people, and therefore he deserved to be taken out by force.

That part of the world, Mr Bush figured, needed to change its way of life, century- old traditions, culture, laws and, perhaps, even the dress code. Why not? A reasonable dose of our present a-la-Bush- kind of freedom and democracy could give the Iraqi’s all they need to succeed in the modern world. Let’s face it, we, the United States of America, have lost face, lots of face, not only with the world in general but even with our friends!

Then came Guantanamo, where the word “torture” started to surface at home as well as overseas. Americans engage in torture? Then came the case of the notorious Iraqi prison Abu Graib, with plenty of photos to boot. “Yes, the Americans are torturers!” shouted all those who saw them. Mr. Bush, however, and the rest of his comrades did not seem to be too affected by the avalanche of negative comments received. Yes, America and all the Americans came out of that barbarous mess diminished, severely diminished. To all those who cared, it was like watching the fathers and mothers of all the tortured men throw stones into the Articles of our Constitution. Perhaps, the Statue of Liberty in the New York bay might have felt ashamed and its light might have dimmed a bit when the news of the tortures became known. It might be dimmed still.

    6. It is a widely perceived fact that Mr. Bush is a devout, practicing Christian. He has publicly declared that he is a “born-again Christian”. His favorite role model is Jesus Christ. He prays every day. The famous journalist Bob Woodward, who wrote Mr. Bush’s biography, writes that before the invasion took place, he (Woodward) asked Mr. Bush if he had asked his father for some advice about the imminent invasion of Iraq. The answer he received was something like this: ” I don’t ask my earthly father for any advice on the matter. I only take the advice of my Heavenly Father. He has already informed me that I am doing the right thing.”

It must be assumed that Mr. Bush reads the Bible, particularly The New Testament, and most of all what Jesus preached before his death on the cross. I repeat, Jesus Christ was and presumably still is Mr. Bush’s role model of all that is righteous, honorable and moral. Let us not mince words at this point. Mr. Bush’s use of violence against another nation, his addiction to lying, his stubborn attitude over personally-held convictions, his lack of understanding of what is the true meaning of truth and justice and his lack of compassion for those who suffer make of him an enemy of Jesus Christ, a hypocrite, a Pharisee, one of those who two thousand years ago betrayed Jesus, a God/Man whose life was dedicated to the daily practice of brotherly love, truth and justice.

Due to the thunderous applause that I received from the far-left over the I Am Tired letter written by one of our troops in Iraq, I thought it prudent to follow up with one last attempt to be very specific about what I have observed and actually personally encountered during my 36 years of service to this Great Country. This will be a one time attempt to reach some of those who are confused by the far-left and their ilk’s unethical rantings and give some insight through my personal experience as a professional military officer over the years. These examples are but a few. In real life there were many more which space and time will not allow.

As a young fighter pilot, flying F-4s in Vietnam, I was stopped in my tracks by the decisions made by Lyndon Johnson and Robert McNamara. I was young and naive, but even then I knew their daily interference was wrong and would not allow us to win this thing and go home. Decisions like not allowing us to strike enemy aircraft while still on the ground, keeping real targets off the target list, and allowing us to strike only rusted-out trucks made us basically a toothpick factory. However, the big one for me came the day I saw the President Lyndon Johnson on television, forcefully lying to the American people. I’ll never forget the language, I want to assure the American people that the United States of America has never, and will never, bomb or use force inside the borders of Cambodia. On and on he disavowed the reports that this was happening. I was amazed. Guess where I had put several F-4 loads of 750 pound general purpose bombs every day for the past five days. You guessed it, Cambodia!!! So much for Mr. Johnson. The only question in my mind was simply, was it just Johnson or was it the methodology of a particular political party’s I decided to delay answering that question until more experience was gained.

Years passed, and I ignored politics as much as possible, as a good military man should. Then came Jimmy Carter. Our young people don’t remember 18% interest rates and 18% inflation, but I’ll bet someone in your family does. That is one really bad thing Carter did for our country, but it is not the worst. During this period, I was an F-15 Squadron Commander, located at Langley AFB, VA. Jimmy Carter and his democratic party stopped spare parts procurement for almost every weapon system in our military, and diverted the funds to social programs. The F-15 was brand new at the time with leading edge technology designed to provide air superiority anywhere in the world on a moments notice. That was my job. I loved it, but guess what? In a two year period from 1979 to 1981, there was not one day when more that one-third of my assigned aircraft were flyable. It is amazing the lengths we went to in those days, cannibalizing parts, expending twice the time and energy to fix every little item, and still two-thirds of the birds were always broken because of no spare parts. Had this country faced a really serious military threat during that time frame, only Montana Hunters could have saved us. The military had some equipment, but it was all broken. Do you want to know the really bad part for me and the young fighter pilots working for me? Our flying sortie rate was so low that pilot proficiency dropped to dangerous levels. The accident rate tripled. That obviously was totally unacceptable, as we were losing expensive airplanes and highly trained young pilots at a rate comparable to losses seen in actual combat. All of a sudden, even a Texas Aggie like me began to see a trend.

Forward a few years to 1986. I am an F-16 Wing Commander at MacDill AFB, Florida, and Ronald Regan is president. His change in attitude and policy toward the military had time to fix the spare parts problem. We were flying 26,000 flying sorties per year out of MacDill AFB, my aircraft fully mission capable rate (FMC) was above 90%, the aircraft accident rate was below 1.75 per hundred thousand flying hours, fighter pilots were flying and proficiency levels were at an all time high. The United States Air Force was ready to defend this Wonderful Country. Proof of the pudding is simple. Look what the USAF, and the military in general, accomplished in Iraq during Desert Storm. And, they did it in less than 100 hours. Yeah, at this point I was starting to realize there was a difference in mentality between Democrats and Republicans, or should I say the Left and the Right.

Then, came everyone’s favorite – Bill Clinton. If there ever was an individual 180 degrees out of sync with the ideals and the values of the US military, it was Clinton. He was a known draft dodger, military hating, self absorbed, unspeakingly shameless and immoral individual, who the Left managed to elect President of the United States of America. Clinton?s antics in the White House would have brought court martial, conviction, and Dishonorable Discharge had he been a military member. We still suffer oral sex on school buses, because the President told the world it wasn’t real sex, and some of our children believed him. It took a lot of years, but now I became certain. There is a big difference in the right and the left on all fronts, and for the first time I started feeling angry and shamed that the majority of the American people were actually willing to vote for such an individual.

Sometimes, an abstract such as the following tells the story in very simple terms: Jane Fonda, Tom Hayden, Lyndon Johnson, Robert McNamara, George Soros, Ted Kennedy, Howard Dean, Bill Clinton, Hillary Clinton, Michael Moore, Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Sean Penn, Nancy Pelosi, Barbra Boxer, John Kerry, Benedict Arnold, and the list goes on. America, wake up. In my opinion, giving in to the likes of these people could allow Abraham Lincoln’s prediction of destruction from within to come true. There is not a country in the world that can be considered a conventional military threat to the United States today. However, this country faces a new kind of threat–one that will not go away. It is a threat even more serious that WWII, because money, industry and technology will not defeat it. It is a threat of defeat from within. It is a threat of a faltering economy because of a lack of resources, or the even the simple threat of such a loss brought on by terrorism. It is a threat created by the American people trusting the inept. It is a threat created by the people wanting change, and perilously believing that the left can successfully deliver that change. Have you seen anything from the left that remotely resembles an answer to the Iraq situation? Have you seen anything more than continued Bush-Bashing? Is that an answer? If there was ever a need for a strong, well trained military, it is now. THE LEFT HAS HISTORICALLY DISMANTLED OUR MILITARY IN THE NAME OF REDISTRUBITION OF WEALTH FAVORING SOCIAL PROGRAMS. We just cannot afford to let that happen now. If we do, the entire country may be bowing to the east several times a day within the next 50 years, maybe sooner.

Now a final thought meant to upset as many as possible on the far-left. As you might guess, I don’t believe in political correctness. So, let’s look at the facts, not far-left rhetoric attempting to empower the democratic party. Initially, I was not a George Bush fan. I am not even a Republican. I normally vote Republican, because of my total despise of Communism, Socialism and the far-left in this country. I am a Conservative. However, during his watch, I feel President Bush just happened to stumble upon the leading edge of the greatest threat this country has ever faced. Mistakes have been made, because of the newness of the threat. Overall, the President has done a superb job dealing the threat, and at the same time held off the constant ranting, raving, deceitful and malicious escapades of the far-left attempting to regain political power. IF THERE WAS EVER A TIME THE COUNTRY NEEDS TO COME TOGETHER AND BACK OUR PRESIDENT, IT IS RIGHT NOW. WITHOUT CONCENSUS WE ARE EMPOWERING THE TERRORIST!!!! I feel the far-left is totally absorbed with a power struggle and regaining control of congress. They could care less about defeating the threat. It literally disgusts me to hear the constant disagreement with everything the President tries to do, all in the name of trying to make him look bad to the voters. Unfortunately, by the time the American people really appreciate how bad the far-left really is, it may too late.

What are the real facts? On the home front this country’s economy is the strongest that it has been in my lifetime. Interest rates are as low as they were when I was in high school forty years ago. Inflation does not exist for all practical purposes. For you youngsters, please remember the Jimmy Carter comments? The Dow is approaching 13,000. Unemployment is nonexistent. Wages are at an all time high. Home ownership is at an all time high. Taxes have been lowered to an almost acceptable level. Because of the surging economy the deficient is under control and projected to go away far ahead of schedule. The far-left is rich beyond its wildest dreams, so Mr. President when are you going to 1Ž2fixŠ all these domestic problems? Give me a break!!!!

On the war front this country has not been touched since 2001. I remember being part of a seminar at the USAF War College in 1983 discussing the terrorist threat. There were some good minds at that table and a lot of disagreement. However, one common thought was that the US would be hit within the next five years. Answers to the terrorist threat were just as hard to come by then as they are now. Well, it took a little longer than the projection, but the attack occurred. For an old military guy like me, the main point here is that it has not happened again. We have suckered the bad guys into entering the fight somewhere other than in our country. To hell with political correctness. The President can’t say this, but I sure can. I smile every morning when I get up and realize that one of our great cities has not been blown away. And, there is zero doubt in my mind that if we pull out of Iraq prematurely, that will happen within a short period of time after our departure. I don’t care what you might think of President Bush personally. He has done the best he can with what he has, and this country is not smoking because of it. So, the anti-American, Bush hating far-left should back off. They honestly don’t have a clue about what they are talking about, and they are doing irreparable damage to our country.

I realize there are different points of view on war, and I do not believe the meek will inherit the earth, at least not in the next few hundred years. To those of the far-left, who will undoubtedly respond to this letter, let me say, this is a strong country! It has survived the uneducated thinking of the far-left before, and I’ll just bet it will again. Regardless of who is President, the people will not tolerate mass explosions on a daily basis, as our good friends in Israel have been forced to do. To protect that position of power, even Hillary will be forced to become a true hawk. To guarantee a few more votes Ted Kennedy may be forced to begin supporting a strong military. One more attack on America might even wipe the giddy, ŒI-am-finally-somebody? grin from Nancy Pelosi’s face, and make her realize that is not about votes and personal power. IT IS ABOUT PROTECTING THIS GREAT COUNTRY FROM ALL ENEMIES, BOTH FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC.

ALAN’S COUNTER-POINTED REPLY TO DAN

Dan,

You lose all credibility as a participant in this conversation when you promote such far right-wing demagoguery . Just the fact he is still invoking the name of Jane Fonda in his diatribe tells me he is not marching to any drummer I hear. Your article is jam-packed with lies and falsehoods:
To begin with, it was not Johnson who ordered the illegal bombing of Cambodia, but rather Nixon. Yes–a Republican. Thus, it was Nixon, not Johnson, who lied to the American people. In fact, his administration was taken to court by (drum roll) a Congresswoman and four Air Force officers, represented by the ACLU to halt the illegal bombing. Here is his exact quote:

”There are no American combat troops in Cambodia. There are no American combat advisers in Cambodia. There will be no American combat troops or advisers in Cambodia. We will aid Cambodia. Cambodia is the Nixon doctrine in its purest form….” – President Richard M. Nixon, November 1971.

By the way, we did not use F-4’s to bomb Cambodia; we used B-52’s. Yet another problem with this story.

Yes, the economy was in crisis while Carter was in office. But it was precipitated by the OPEC oil crisis in 1973 (while Nixon was still in office). Additionally, productivity had stagnated during the 1970s. The Federal deficit had grown, long before Carter took office. Carter inherited a bad economy and did not make it better. I think it was the Japanese kick the ass that got U.S. industry to focus more on quality and customers, as much as presidential leadership, that turned around the U.S. economy in the 80s.

As for military spending, that increase began two years before Carter left office. I think it is interesting that the General mentions the year 1986, because that is when spending began to taper off again.

He also fails to mention the largest draw-down post WWII occurred during the Bush I presidency, when Dick Cheney was Secretary of Defense.

Calling Clinton a draw-dodger when the current commander in chief effectively dodged Vietnam service is mystifying. Why do conservatives continue to defend the preferential treatment Bush received to get into the Guard, and then his failure to report for duty for two years? By the way, are you going to call Dick Cheney a draft dodger too? He got five educational deferments. Rumsfeld never served. Wolfowitz never served; both coasted on deferments.

Here another great lie: 1Ž2THE LEFT HAS HISTORICALLY DISMANTLED OUR MILITARY IN THE NAME OF REDISTRUBITION OF WEALTH FAVORING SOCIAL PROGRAMS.Š

Really? What programs is this guy talking about? Education. Que Lastima? Surely not Medicare or Medicaid since I bet he receives Medicare. Hopefully not Social Security since he probably gets that too. If he does enjoy his Social Security, Medicare, and public education for his children he should thank a God-less liberal.

1Ž2On the home front this country’s economy is the strongest that it has been in my lifetime. Interest rates are as low as they were when I was in high school forty years ago. Inflation does not exist for all practical purposes. For you youngster’s, please remember the Jimmy Carter comments? The Dow is approaching 13,000. Unemployment is nonexistent. Wages are at an all time high. Home ownership is at an all time high. Taxes have been lowered to an almost acceptable level. Because of the surging economy the deficient is under control and projected to go away far ahead of schedule.

During the nineties, when that Democrat Clinton was in office, the economy experienced it fastest post-war expansion ever. Crime rates dropped nationally. Teen pregnancies dropped, DWI’s dropped. Unemployment reached historic lows. Home ownership in America reached historic highs. When Clinton left office there was a budget SURPLUS.

For the past 7 years Bush has cut taxes while pursuing a ruinous war in the Middle East. Consequently we now have a multi-billion dollar deficit. Crime is once again on the rise. The housing market slowed more than a year ago. There is a record number of foreclosures. Real wages, what the little guys take home, has remained stagnant. The gap between the richest Americans and poorest has not been this large since 1929. The economy barely registered any growth for the first quarter of 2007. This guy is not so big on facts is he? But then, he probably cannot be bothered with the truth either.

Put that in your war pipe and smoke it!

General P was not acting in a military capacity when he was preaching those phony stats about the success of the surge. Criticism of him was making fair comment on a soap-boxing political act. I would not fault him in any way for following orders in the theater of war, but when he’s over here blowing Bush’s “success” smoke up Congressional skirts, he needs to be outed for the betrayer he is. Bush had his little military puppet put out that propaganda instead of Bush because Bush is smart enough to know no one’s listening to him any more. Petreus (at least until he assumed the bully pulpit in Washington) at one time had some credibility. That credibility is gone, thanks in large part to the dedication, determination and increasing power of Moveon.org.

“The deficit is under control and taxes have been lowered by Bush. ’’ Again this is a laughable statement. Oil prices are at an all-time high with gas prices at three dollars a gallon. The tax burden is being transferred to the middle class. The deficit is at all time high.

By: Dr. Leonard Carrier, DW In-House Historian and Philosopher

On September 13 we got President Bush’s plan for Iraq. He announced that incremental withdrawals would take place, but that in 2009 we would still have a significant military presence in that country. In other words, he is determined to hand the war off to our next president so that his own administration will not be blamed for losing it. This might be crafty politics, but his strategy is being paid for in the blood of our servicemen and women, not to mention the blood of Iraqi civilians enmeshed in an intractable civil war. What conceivable good can be gained from policing a civil war? There is none. Our occupation is the fuel that keeps the fires of insurrection burning.

What the President has done is to challenge all those in Congress who demand a timetable for leaving Iraq to put their money where their mouths are, or rather, not to put any more money into funding our occupation. Until now, with a few notable exceptions, Congress has been loath to advocate the only means at their disposal for ending our occupation of Iraq, which is to cut off funding. They have not done so because they are afraid of being accused of “not supporting the troops.” This is a groundless fear. They can vote to provide only those funds used to bring these troops home safely. That is the sensible way to support the troops, not by continuing to let them fall prey to daily insurgent attacks.

John Edwards responded to the President’s speech in a commercial on MSNBC paid for by his presidential campaign. In no uncertain terms, Edwards put the pressure where it should have been ever since Democrats won both houses of Congress last year. Given that President Bush will not yield on his plan of our never-ending presence in Iraq, Congress must simply accept Bush’s challenge and cut off funding for the war. Of course, this will take courage, and the President is betting that Congress does not have the will to do it. Because arguments will not sway this president, the time has come for Congress to put up or shut up.

Dennis Kucinich has outlined a 12-point plan for withdrawing from Iraq, based on the premise that the solution in Iraq must be political and not military. He argues convincingly that it is not credible to oppose the war and yet continue funding it, and so the Administration should be notified now that Congress will not approve further appropriations to continue our occupation.

In brief, here is what we must do under Kucinich’s plan: (1) announce that we will end the occupation, close our military bases, and withdraw; (2) use funds already appropriated to pay for the safe return of our troops and their equipment, while preparing for the transition of an international peacekeeping force; (3) order all U.S. contractors home and turn over contracting work to Iraqis; (4) convene a regional conference to develop a stabilizing force for Iraq, using the UN to organize this conference; (5) work with the UN to mobilize and authorize peacekeeping forces; (6) develop and fund a drive for national reconciliation among Kurds, Sunnis, and Shiites; (7) restart the failed reconstruction of Iraq, with the jobs going to local Iraqis; (8) along with Great Britain, pay reparations to Iraqis for causing loss of life, injuries, and damage to property; (9) deny any intention to privatize Iraq’s oil assets, allowing Iraq to have political sovereignty; (10) set out a plan to stabilize Iraq’s costs for food and energy; (11) work with the world community to restore Iraq’s fiscal integrity; and (12) establish a policy of truth and reconciliation between the people of the United States and the people of Iraq.

John Edwards has answered Bush’s plan for endless war with a plea to Congress to bring our troops home now. Dennis Kucinich has a detailed plan showing how this can be done. It is time for members of Congress to forget about the possible political fallout and to stiffen their spines and take action. If they do not do so then they remain complicit in Mr. Bush’s war.

A COVERT MEXICAN STAND-OFF

A DW “E X C L U S I V E” and…. A “MUST-READ”

By: Dr. Leonard Carrier, D.W. In-House Historian and Philosopher and Robert Foster*, DW Contributor and In-House Conservative Counsel , with an Introduction and preface by DW Foreign Policy Editor, Dusty Schoch outlining the unique circumstances where DW “art” (Len Carrier’s Article) induced—in dreamlike fashion– our DW writer in Georgia to deal with 5 illegal Mexican Aliens in a manner and under circumstances I predict you will find unique and memorable. I labeled this article a “must read” because it is one of Len Carrier’s most compelling commentaries on our immigration policy, followed by Foster’s real-life reactions recorded by the author (Foster) himself and recounted in his entertaining and inimitable short-story style.

Dear DW and B.E.A. Staff and friends,

As DW writers and contributors, I know we all wonder from time to time whether—or to what extent—our expressions and polemic offerings actually have an effect on the readership. The sequel to the Carrier article provides us substantial incentive never to question what we remedial bloggers are about.

Robert Foster is an amazing thinker and personality I had the privilege of becoming friends with while attending law school in Tuscaloosa Alabama (U. of Ala.’s home site). Foster is a life-long conservative Republican and we have enjoyed sparring from time to time on Bush policies, domestic and foreign. Foster was among those “DW friends” I sent a preview of Carrier’s presently-featured article on corporate American complicity in our illegal alien problems.

Without further waxing, I give you (some of you for the second time) Len Carrier’s piece, preceded by my little introduction, following which I urge you all to relish and derive encouragement and hope from Foster’s letter to me…which I have elected to share with its proper audience (the world).

Thanks, Len, for placing the focus and blame on proper target. Corporate hiring of illegals is the hole in our national dyke, and criminal prosecution (of employing corporations) is the only mortar. Thanks, R.F., for showing us all that the mark of true intelligence is not always being right, but rather always being able and willing to readjust one’s vision and actions in order to see—and/or imagine, and/or do– what is right.

Best,

Dusty

BUSH’S IMMIGRATION SLOGAN:

“Welcome, Guest Workers…

To the Corporate States of America”

By DW In-House Historian and Philosopher, Leonard Carrier, who points us poignantly to the fact that Bush’s newest Neo-Con euphemism is calling our immigrant slave population, “Guest Workers”.

The problem of illegal immigrants has been exacerbated since President Bush took office.

The chief cause is that of corporations seeking cheap labor. Most of these people came here legally under “guest worker” H-2A and H-2B programs. They not only got low wages but they also suffered other abuses.

See the Southern Poverty Law Center’s report, “Close to Slavery,” that outlines all this. When their visas ran out, many of them didn’t go back to their countries but stayed in illegal status rather than work legally under deplorable conditions. The corporations then asked for more “guest workers,” and the process continued. Big business has had a sweet deal. They pay lousy wages, treat the workers like indentured servants, and let the government (that’s you and me) pick up the tab for social services. Then they ask for more cheap labor when the current crew has gone underground.

Now the Bush administration hopes to get even more “guest workers,” and it is willing to throw more money at security fences (which won’t solve the real problem) and to mollify Hispanics by offering a tortuous path to legality for those illegals already here. I was glad to see this so-called “reform” bill strangled in its crib. I think that the problem should be attacked at its root, which is corporate desire for an underclass of workers whom they can exploit. If the penalties are made severe enough for employers who hire illegals, then the ones already here won’t be able to work and they won’t stay. If the “guest worker” programs are forced to pay a living wage and provide health benefits, then corporations will seek out citizens and legal immigrants to hire, instead.

I don’t think it’s fair to blame the illegals already here for the situation in which they find themselves. If you’re poor and desperate you’ll take advantage of all the services that are offered. I’m afraid that much of the criticism of the immigrant reform bill is misplaced, and it results in a nativism that tends to blame the victim. I think that we have sufficient immigration laws on the books to deport illegal immigrants if we had the will to do it.

Big business would prefer things as they are–an inexhaustible supply of cheap labor, with the average taxpayer picking up the tab for health and social services. Unfortunately, if social services are cut off for illegals, then it will probably be cut for poor people who are here legally, as well. I don’t think it’s a good idea to make war on poor people.

I remember Emma Lazarus’s words, “Give me your tired and your poor…” inscribed at the Statue of Liberty. We are a nation of immigrants. What we need is an orderly process for immigration to take place. Big business doesn’t care about that, because it doesn’t enhance their bottom line.

FOSTER’S DREAM

(in Cobb County, Georgia):

Dusty,

I received your e-mail at 3:57 PM yesterday and immediately read Carrier’s piece with great interest and reflection – particularly given the fact that I had scheduled 5 guest workers to come tomorrow and clean up a pile of tree limbs, cross ties and whatnot that I have accumulated on the back of my property over the past 30 years.

Several days ago I was speaking with a friend and lamenting that I could find no one interested in cleaning up my property; mentioning that I had even spoken with a law-enforcement friend about getting some prisoners lend-leased to me but found that questionable practice had been discontinued in our state some decades earlier. But my friend said that last year he had used some Mexicans to work at his house. He told me they congregated at the town square in Marietta and if I got up there early morning, I could pick up as many as I wanted at $5.00 hour plus food. Problem solved – or so I thought.

You know how dreams sometimes serve to solve problems that, confronted in the daylight you find impossible of resolution. Well, with the situation of my back yard property sort of weighing on my subconscious, and with the reading of Carrier’s article still fresh on my mind, I went to sleep last night and had the most extraordinary dream, which I will here share with you.

At 6:00AM in the morning, before first light, I pulled up to the square in my big fully-Loaded 1994 Lincoln Town Car. I quickly deduced that this was a no-miss proposition–only me and a circa 1958 yellow GMC school bus with “Cobb County Schools” on the side of the bus having been crudely crossed out and the single word “Jesus” painted above (or was it Jose’–couldn’t quite make out in the existing light). There could only be one winner in such a one-sided pairing and it damn sure wasn’t colored yellow.

However, my sense of a forthcoming triumph quickly evaporated when I realized that only the big Lincoln and the yellow GMC were on the square – not one single Mexican was in sight. I thought maybe it was a little early as the sun was just starting to break over the trees that line the square. At this point, I noticed someone standing next to the bus, so I decided to head over and see if he could tell me if I were at the right place to pick up Mexicans. I didn’t know if I were on the way to church or a cutting but in either event I needed 5 hard-working Mexicans and this was the only guy around–or at least I thought it was a guy.

As I neared the bus I saw that the guy was in fact a very attractive lady wearing white linen slacks and with her blond hair pulled back in a tight bun. Had I not been focused on her as I approached, I would have noticed that every Mexican in Marietta, Georgia (and possibly all outlying cities) was packed inside the bus. It was as if this were the last chance to cross the Rio Grande. As I introduced myself to the lady, whose name as it turns out was “June” * and not Jose’ or Jesus, several Mexicans came from between some buildings, shot across the street at full gallop and pushed through the bus doors. There was no way to get another soul on the bus, let alone a person but they kept coming. It was like a run of herring. They just kept coming and coming but none were hopping in the Big Lincoln.

Well, Dusty, when Robert Foster has his mind set on something, the table isn’t going to be cleared before he has dessert, which in this case was 5 Mexicans today – not tomorrow or next week. The brush pile was going and it was going today. First, I turned on the charm and asked June if she could let me have a few of her Mexicans (I was coy – holding in reserve the fact that “few” correlated to 5). When she responded that she couldn’t help me, I asked her why the hell not (charm and coyness aside – time to become aggressive). You will not believe what I learned.

June was an executive of a large multi- national firm (she speaks five languages and is fluent in Spanish) and worked 15 hour days which left no time for housekeeping or gardening. So she got in her car one day, went to the square in Marietta and found a gardener and a housekeeper/cook. She lives in East Cobb County (where the elite reside as opposed to us outcasts down here in lower Cobb County). June hosts many parties and her friends begin to notice the quality of the maid and gardener’s work. This leads the friends to ask how they could get such good (but principally cheap) help. I will fast forward as it is getting late.

June buys a bus at a Marietta School Board surplus equipment auction, quits her job and starts supplying domestic help (guest workers) to every social climber in East Cobb. She picks up at the square between 6 and 6:45 Monday thru Saturday and delivers the workers to the homes and then picks them up and returns to the square at the end of the day. She spends approximately 5 hours a day driving the bus and another hour on paper work (all requests for domestics come via e-mail). It is totally a cash operation. She pays the Mexicans $7.00/hr and bills them at $15.00. After minimal expenses, June figures she clears $6.50/hr x 8 hours x 6 days x 46 domestics = $14,352 or $746,304 per year. I bit for 5 @ $15 and she dropped them off at the house around 8:30 this morning and gave them instructions as to what I wanted done (none of them spoke English). Now here is where it gets interesting.

At 4:30 P.M., after some soul searching prompted by Carrier’s piece, I decided to put the Mexicans in my car and return to the square. None of them could understand what I wanted until I flashed a wad of $20’s and then it was a chicken on a June bug. All 5 hopped in the Big Lincoln and I dropped them off at the square after stopping at the cash machine so I could give them each $120 (8 hours x $15). I returned home and this gets us to 6:15PM when June arrives to pick up the 5 Mexicans only to find that I had already returned them to the square. She was fine with this until she asked for payment and I told her I gave $120 to each worker and handed her a copy of Carrier’s piece.

As I compose this letter, the 5 Mexican guest workers are patiently awaiting my arrival at the square and I am in the process of deciding what I—today, in real life and realtime—intend to do with the problem before me. Whether I will perform in conformance with the version of myself which appeared to me in my dreams—who I consider to be idealistic to the point of being “heroic”, or whether I will do otherwise, is yet to be determined…somewhat in a scenario similar to the problem American presently faces in regard to its illegal Mexican population in general. What each of us as individuals—in the microcosm—in deed do will determine what our country as a macrocosmic whole becomes.

I do plan to respond hereafter more definitively to Carrier’s piece which has some good points and valid observations. However, I believe the problem runs much deeper than big business. It would not surprise me if over 50% of the “guest workers” are employed by small business and /or individuals. Where everyone is living in sin, it is hard to find anyone willing to cast the first stone. I sincerely hope that —in either my dream state or my waking words– I haven’t hit a friend.

Foster

July 13, 2007

P.S. As an afterthought, I wonder: Would $200,000 be too much for the Atlanta Franchise rights??

**Robert Foster is a legal scholar and businessman and humorist living in South Georgia; this is his initial (hopefully of many) contribution to DW. Names (including “June”) have been changed to protect the guilty and innocent alike.

BILL By: Leonard Carrier, DW In-House Historian and Philosopher

Congress is now debating the hodge-podge of an immigration bill that the George W. Bush desperately wants to sign. So far, it contains something for everyone—more miles of fence, a path to legality for the roughly twelve million illegal immigrants already here, and, dearest to Bush’s heart, a guest worker program that would allow U.S. employers to pay low wages to hundreds of thousands of foreign workers. The bill is a nightmare. Like the No Child Left Behind Act, and the Patriot Act, this 1000-page Frankenstein monster was cobbled together by staffers with no likelihood that anyone in Congress would actually read the whole thing. We know that “No Child Left Behind” has failed its purpose, and we now know that the Patriot Act was used as an excuse to have the government spy on us; but this immigration bill promises to top them both in sheer stupidity, and, I should add, cupidity on the part of employers lusting to make profits on the backs of underpaid workers, while leaving American workers out in the cold.

The first thing that Congress should do with this bill is to uncouple the part that tries to right our present immigration woes from the so-called guest worker program. The concentration should be on how best to give the twelve million illegal immigrants already here a path to legality. Congress should not be afraid of the word ‘amnesty’ The best way to handle the problem of undocumented workers is to offer them a way to come out from the shadows. They are not felons. Being “illegal” is a civil offense, not a criminal one. They should be given the chance to purchase a new temporary visa that would allow them to work in this country, and also to pay taxes. The price should not be too high to prevent their becoming legal, and it need not be paid all at once. If their record is clean after a two-year period, they could be given a choice, either to renew their temporary visa, or to apply for a permanent visa. Anyone with a criminal record should be deported, as should anyone who does not opt for legality. We already have sufficient immigration laws on the books to find and deport those who opt to stay in this country illegally. Congress should use money designed for border fences—which is money ill-spent, since the fences are really no deterrent–to increase the number of immigration agents whose job it should be to find and deport illegal immigrants. More important, employers should bear the responsibility should they hire illegal immigrants. A really stiff fine, or even jail time, might be imposed. If undocumented immigrants are prevented from getting jobs, then it is highly likely that they will either leave the country, or else take the necessary steps to become legal.

Central to Bush’s plan, however, is his guest worker program, which would allow foreign workers to enter the country to work on a temporary basis. If Bush gets his way on this, the path is open for hundreds of thousands of new “guest workers” to flood our employment rolls. What Bush doesn’t say, however, is that we already have a guest worker program for unskilled laborers, one that is largely hidden because these workers are socially and geographically isolated. This is the current H-2 program that brought about 121,000 guest workers into the United States in 2005, roughly 32,000 doing agricultural work, and the others in low-paid non-agricultural industries.

The H-2 workers, however, are not treated like guests. Instead they are systematically exploited and abused. They lack the ability to change jobs if they are mistreated and are instead bound like slaves to the employers who import them. If workers complain about abuses, they face deportation or other retaliation. Even though the Department of Labor provides some basic protections to H-2 workers, government enforcement of their rights is nearly non-existent, and private lawyers typically refuse to take their cases. This being the case, these workers are routinely cheated out of wages, forced to live in squalid conditions, denied medical benefits for injuries on the job, and are held captive by employers or labor brokers who confiscate their documents. All this has been documented in a 2007 report of the Southern Poverty Law Center, entitled, “Close to Slavery: Guestworker Programs in the United States.” This report is based on thousands of interviews with guest workers, scores of legal cases, and the experiences of legal experts throughout the country. As Congressman Charles Rangel put it recently, “This guest-worker program’s the closest thing I’ve ever seen to slavery.”

Of the twelve million illegal immigrants in the United States, most of them entered legally. They chose not to try to renew their visas and instead went underground. The reason they chose to do this should be obvious. They did not like the way they were treated by their employers. When their work visas expired they were supposed to leave the United States Rather than do this, and rather than put up with the exploitation they experienced, they became illegal immigrants. Now President Bush wants more temporary workers to enter our low-wage labor market. It should be clear that this tactic is likely to swell the ranks of illegal immigrants once the mistreatment of these new workers forces them to choose either to leave or to go underground. Bush’s plan is simply a way of allowing employers to hire disposable labor on the cheap. Congress should reject it, not only because it will exacerbate our present immigration problem, but also because it would deprive Americans of jobs they would be willing to perform for a fair wage.

Before any new guest-worker program is installed, the defects of the old one need to be cured. Here is an outline of the recommendations contained in The Southern Poverty Law Center’s report. First, Federal laws protecting guest workers from abuse must be strengthened, including a process that allows workers to gain permanent residency over time. Second, The Department of Labor must force employers to comply with guest-worker contracts, including a means of recovering earned wages not paid by employers. Third, Congress must provide guest workers with access to our courts, including federally funded legal services for all guest workers and penalties for employers who confiscate guest-worker documents. The Thirteenth Amendment to our Constitution abolished slavery. It is high time that the “legalized slavery” of our H-2 programs be brought to an end.

To me that makes it seem more like a laboratory experiment. We’ve got the rats (Iraqis) at our mercy, and we’re using the cats (our military) to experiment on them. Sometimes the rats fight back and kill some cats. In the background are the animal trainers (like Paul Bremer) who devise a new environment for the rats to live in (flat income tax, privatization of oil revenues) to see how many rats can survive in those new surroundings.

We also have the animal doctors who measure how much depleted uranium it takes to kill the rat-babies. We let the rats form a government–but only under our political trainers. We then devise punishments for the rat-government when they don’t meet certain demands, like controlling violence on the part of certain rat-rebels whose rat-families have been killed by our cats.

If this sounds like speciesism, that’s because it is. We use terms like “raghead” and “greaseball” to describe the rats, and we devise tortures for them for our entertainment, just to let them see how much we detest them (Guantanamo and Abu Ghraib). All the while, we tell the rats that what we’re doing is for their own good, that it’s part of “democratization,” and then we take a poll to see whether we’re convincing any of them. Of the rats we do manage to convince, we tell them that it’s too bad the other rats are now their enemies for collaborating with us, and that they’d better watch their backs. Then we can check to see how effective they are in staying alive.

Orwell had it right. In 1984 his premise was that constant war abroad allowed Big Brother to run roughshod over everyone’s rights at home (except for those running the rat race). Then in Animal Farm he showed how easy it was for the pigs to take over the farm and persecute the other animals. Iraq is our animal farm, and the pigs who control the cats are having a field day.
