ONE FREE VOICE
AT A TIME …

The Coastal Post Story

By DI Editor, Dusty Schoch

The Neo-Con Zionists are at it again…The neo-conservative fundamentalist Christian and Jewish Zionist Right who covertly seized control of America through a quiet coup of a clueless president’s Pentagon are now—thanks to Obama’s victory–swept effectively out of power, but they have retreated back from where they came– into America’s fecund theocratic grassroots where they are still—fervently– at work to convert America into a fascistic armed force to execute Jewish and Christian Zionist plans of Middle Eastern and/or world domination, a.k.a. Christian “Rapture” and Judeo-Christian “Armageddon”.

The case here in point is the effort on part of fundamentalist Jews in California to destroy—literally– a small and independent Morin County newspaper (The Coastal Post) for daring to oppose Israel’s militant policies in Gaza and Palestine.

Here’s what I propose we all do: (1) Read the story of the Jewish assault on American free press as it is written in the victim newspaper (with whose editor, Dan Deane, I just spoke, confirming the details and direness of the situation). Story gist: Newspapers are being literally stolen from racks and Coastal Post advertisers are being warned and intimidated by pro-Israel Zionist Jews to pull their advertisements from the paper. (2) Go on line and read the on-line Coastal Post and see what a wonderfully informative, independent and free-thinking publication it is, and then (3) reflect on what you can do to help this brave vestige of free American Media survive the dreadful juggernaut combine of (a) corporate-controlled media and (b) the continuing rise of fascistic Jewish/Christian fundamentalism in America which is still working subversively to ordain Christian and Jewish prophesies of Rapture and Zionist Armageddon in the Middle East and around the globe according to the plan already made the subject of this website’s “Free Book” entitled “American Fascism” , linked here and on our DI “Current Issues” pages.

Immediately trailing the Coastal Post’s own accounting of their struggle with fascistic American Zionists, is a sampling of their journalistic excellence written by Dr. Edward W. Miller, entitled “More Worms In The Capitalist Apple”. When you read it, you’ll realize that this is an exceptionally independent and excellent analysis of the on-going economic collapse of American-evolved capitalism which we are all contending with in one form and another. You will not have read it in one of your corporate conglomerate-owned newspapers. This form of truly independent and (if you will) “maverick” journalism is for the most part found only in the independent press, so well represented by and embodied in “The Coastal Post”.

For my part, I intend to link “The Coastal Post” to DI, and their editor assures me they will in turn link us to their on-line edition. The link between us is the spirit and cause of democratic (little-D) Independence that characterizes DI’s mission statement. I for one, as an individual, plan to both send them money and subscribe to their on-line news service (http://www.coastalpost.com/08/12/01a.html). As I said in the caption to this prefatory piece, it’s high time for all of us to do all we can to prevent another coup of America’s freedoms, especially our freedoms of speech and of the press.

Infusion of financial support from Coastal Post readers in November made December’s print edition happen and killed last month’s prediction that the paper might not print in December.
There has been a steady decline in advertising income over the last two years due to concerted efforts by a small group of individuals with strong Israeli sympathies who object to the paper’s coverage of Palestinian issues. They have contracted advertisers and distribution locations claiming the newspaper is anti-Semitic, anti-Israeli and a Jew bashing publication.

“We’re dealing with people who don’t want what we’re saying read. The Palestinian tragedy in Gaza, is the largest human rights travesty in our time.” publisher-editor Don Deane said as the Coastal Post went to press Dec. 1.

Thousands of papers have been stolen from newsstands over the last year. The Coastal Post’s critics claim the publication should not be allowed to distribute or advertise in Marin. CP critics have reportedly spoken before the city counsels, and the Marin County Board of Supervisors asking papers not be available in government buildings.

The Coastal Post, published since 1975, has lost one-third of its advertising revenues and 10 percent of distribution locations since the campaign began to disrupt and interfere with publication, distribution and advertising.

It would appear that letters have been sent to most all advertisers saying, “It would be no exaggeration to say that the Coastal Post is a viciously anti-Semitic organ that publishes articles about Jews and about Israel in virtually every issue…”

“Your advertising in this vile paper might lead your friends, patrons and customers to assume that you share its malicious and hateful views and those of its owner/publisher Don Deane, who, I understand, is also the owner of a place called Smiley’s in Bolinas. Please let me respectfully suggest that you withdraw your advertising from this despicable anti-Semitic publication…”

“Thou hast taken usury and increase, and thou hast greedily gained of thy neighbors by extortion, and thou hast forgotten me saith the Lord.-Ezekiel 22:12 (King James Version)”
“Let us Prohibit in effective fashion all corporations from making contributions for any political purpose, directly or indirectly. – Theodore Roosevelt”
With the Dow dropping over 499 points in two consecutive days and resting around 7500, the value of 401Ks dropping sharply, and over 27,000 Americans applying for unemployment insurance this week (added to the 514,000 already enrolled), the 1.2 million jobs lost in 2008 come better into focus.
The atmosphere in Washington today is much more tense than during that second weekend in September when Wall Street jolted an already anxious public with news that a failing Merrill-Lynch was being purchased by the Bank of America, that America’s largest investment bank, Lehman Brothers, was declaring bankruptcy after the Feds had refused to bail them out, and that AIG, our largest insurance group, had reported $60 billion in bad debts, its stocks losing 65% in value.

The Dow on that frantic Tuesday had dropped some 504 points. In October, following a week’s precipitous fall of the Dow and after Congress had modified and passed Bush Jr.’s “buy-out” plan, prominent Wall Street financier, Warren Buffett remarked, “It’s an economic Pearl Harbor.”

On Columbus Day financial bigwigs from Europe met with Bush and his business advisors in Washington. No detailed plan to meet the international crisis resulted, but the British decided to nationalize three major banks, the Germans promised almost half a trillion to bolster their entire banking system, while the EU president with his colleagues agreed on what is a partial nationalization of European bank, including a guarantee that covered the savings account of every citizen of the EU countries’.

Our man Paulson, joining the gang, said he “would take $250 billion from his $700 billion bailout money for a so-called “Voluntary Equity Purchase Program” wherein Washington gets to buy out preferred bank stocks while CEO’s golden parachutes were supposedly limited.

“This is an investment, not an expenditure, and there is no reason to expect this program will cost taxpayers anything,” Paulson said in a statement.

Aside from the nine large banks originally signed up for the program, the Treasury attracted the interest “from a broad group of banks of all sizes,” Paulson added.

Paulson’s plan, a partial Nationalization of the banks (Some Republican critics called it “Socialism”, was similar in many respects to Roosevelt’s 1933-5 RFC which, after a proclaimed “Bank Holiday” injected capital into some 6000 failing banks. Washington announced it had hired global giant Bank of New York Mellon as the lead agency to help manage the spending, lending and accounting of the 700 billion.

The precipitous market fallout, plus our obvious economic slowdown, which Bush and his Wall Street financial advisors now admit ” is a real depression” didn’t just sprout up over night like a mushroom on the lawn, but has been quietly spreading like a mold within our financial structure for years.

Last summer’s stock market bubble and shaky recovery which, as it burst toward the end of August 2007, had cost investors over $6 trillion in US dollars, and was echoed in England where thousands of Brits stood in line to demand their money back from one of their country’s largest banks. Responding to this precarious August weekend, Asian stocks dropped in value, Japan’s Nikkei Index fell more than 4% and the dollar was down sharply against the Yuan, yen and Euro. This international fallout pales in contrast to our present slump.

As the March 17th 2007 Washington Post had reported: The Feds, promised some $200 Billion as a “lender of last resort” for 20 major Wall Street firms, a role it had played since its founding in 1913, but only for commercial banks. In 1902 and again in 1909, J.P. Morgan personally set aside funds to bail out potential failing banks.

This $200 billion offer of ultra-safe Treasury securities to our nation’s banks and major brokerage firms, was in exchange for a variety of collateral options –including the very mortgage-backed securities that had created the financial crisis. Banks quickly unloaded some of their not so secure assets, freeing up money, as Wall Street noted: “to keep the nation’s economic bloodstream flowing.” This bailout by the Feds, however, did little to stem the oncoming financial storm.

The 9 July SF Chronicle reported Levi Strauss and Co. profit in the second quarter plunged 98% to $701,000 compared to $45.7 million the year before. General Motors was closing four US plants and laying off 20,000 workers, while asking management-level employees to accept early retirement. The SF Chronicle also reported that by June, the US workforce had lost 709,000 jobs in 2008, that STARBUCKS was closing 600 stores and laying off 12,000 workers, and, as THE PROGRESSIVE (May, 2008) noted: The SHARPER IMAGE declared bankruptcy, closing ninety-six US stores. As the downturn continued, on September 16 Hewlett-Packard announced a lay-off some 24,000 jobs over the next three years, and in October American Express laid off 7000. With stocks loosing 65% in value. The Dow on that frantic Tuesday had dropped some 504 points In October, following a week’s precipitous fall of the Dow and after Congress had modified and passed Bush Jr.’s “buy-out” plan, prominent Wall Street financier, Warren Buffett remarked “It’s an economic Pearl Harbor.”

Fuelled by a virtual deregulation of financial capital markets, beginning in the1990′s…widespread corruption and fraud was producing a housing bubble of epic proportions. Mortgage borrowing rose more than $4 trillion between 2003 and 2006 with $2 trillion issued in sub prime mode. “Sub prime” is “nonspeak” for inadequately-funded or often, criminally-structured mortgages, some actually programmed to fail and often sold to trusting but ignorant buyers, blacks or Spanish-speaking immigrant families, completely unaware of what they were signing at the bank.

As the Stock market continued to tumble, First on the list, the Feds gave JP Morgan Chase, $236.2 million, to buy out the 85 year-old Bear Sterns investment firm, at a price representing only 1% of what Bear Stearns had been worth only ten days before. Fallout from the Bear Stearns collapse and buyout was not hidden from an anxious public. KPFA’s financial reporter noted that California Teachers Retirement Plan, investment in Bear Stearns, “had just lost $85 million.” Meanwhile mortgage foreclosures by the tens of thousands were presenting themselves across the country. The HOPE NOW data program reported back in April, 2008: “More than 2 million loans were at least 60 days delinquent”

While the big boys in Wall Street were enjoying the Fed’s bounty, a considerably smaller largess was directed at the American Taxpayer from Bush and Congress: On January 24th, 2008 Bush and leaders of the House provided almost $100 billion in tax rebates to 117 million taxpayers and another $40 billion in tax reductions for businesses ” in a bid to avert a recession.”

Like all of these “bail-out” deals, the Fed’s promised, the money will eventually come out of the taxpayer’s pocket. Printing extra money simply dilutes out the basic value of the US dollar on the world market, making everything we buy more expensive, while threatening the economy of other countries.

On 16 July, frightened by the INDYMAC collapse, the government announced a “massive aid package” to the two shareholder owned companies: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. According to a Reuters dispatch, that plan, which won approval from a frightened Congress, was designed to “head off a potential meltdown in financial markets.”

Both Fannie and Freddie had been buying mortgages from banks and other lenders and either kept them or repackaged them into securities sold to investors as hedge funds, derivatives, etc. According to the SF Chron 25 June, 2008: “Three months after Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac won the freedom to step up home-loan purchases, these government-chartered finance companies were doing what critics of the Federal Reserve and Congress had predicted: Instead of using powers granted by Congress to buy jumbo loans, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were purchasing their own mortgage-backed securities, to reduce losses and protect their stockholders… Since the rule-change took effect, in March, Fannie Mae had repackaged $24 million in jumbo loans into securities, while Freddie Mac added $220 million. In April these two spent more than $ 32.4 billion buying their own instruments. ” Doing it unto others” again, in typical Wall Street fashion.

In contrast, Britain’s prime minister, Gordon Brown, while urging nations to “tackle economy together,” in bailing out Britain’s largest banks specified that the bailout money be spent on loans to business rather than buyouts and stock dividends to the bank’s investors.

The fact that the majority of the our “buyouts” were directed at Wall Street favorites didn’t puzzle those Americans who understand that the Federal Reserve

System (FRS) is not Federal, but a privately owned and controlled coalition of banks. The Fed has no reserves except the paper it prints at will and the zeros it adds into its coffers via computers… The system has always been a scam. The real purpose of the Fed is to transfer wealth, such as real property, and other assets into the hands of the Fed’s owners with printed paper. It is the evil product of a conspiracy of bankers and tycoons who secretly met on Jekyl Island on Christmas Eve 1913.

As Globalresearch.ca (25 July, 2008) notes: “To get their bill passed… the Wall Street faction changed the bull’s name to the Federal Reserve Act and brought it three days before Christmas when Congress was preoccupied with departure for the holidays. The Bill was so obscurely written that no one really understood its provisions.

The national money supply would be printed by the US Bureau of Engraving and Printing but it would be issued as an obligation or debt of the government to a private central bank. The Federal Reserve was wholly owned by a consortium of private banks; it is controlled by bankers and it protects their interests. It issues Federal Reserve Notes (dollar bills) for the cost of printing them or, more often for the cost of entering numbers on a computer screen.) This privately issued money is then lent to the government and is owed back to the private Federal Reserve with interest. The interest is eventually refunded to the government, but only after the Fed deducts its operating expenses and a 6% guaranteed return for its bank stockholders. Congress and the President have some input in appointing the Federal Reserve Board, but the Board works behind closed doors with regional bankers, without congressional oversight or control. Bank CEOs actually sit on the Boards of the Fed’s twelve branches. The banking lobby is powerful because private bankers, not the government, create our money and control who gets it.

The Federal Reserve Act of 1913 was a major coup for the international bankers. They had battled for more than a century to establish a private central bank in the United States with the exclusive right to “monetize ” the government’s debt, i.e. to print their own money and exchange it for government securities or I.O.U.s

The Federal Reserve Act authorized a private central bank to create money out of nothing, lend it to the government at interest, and control the national money supply, expanding it or contracting it at will. Representative Charles Lindbergh, Sr. (father of America’s flying hero) said: “This Act establishes the most gigantic trust on earth. When the President signs the Bill, the invisible government of the Monetary Power will be legalized… The worst legislative crime of the ages is perpetrated by this banking and currency Bill.”

In March, 2008, on the Charlie Rose Show former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker said the Fed’s decision to lend money to Bear Stearns to keep it from collapsing “is unprecedented and raises some real questions” about whether that’s the appropriate role for the Fed… Again, on the Charlie Rose Show on October 9th, Volker said: “Our financial markets have become a Potemkin village.” While on the same show Dominique Straus Kahn, present head of the IMF and France’s former finance minister said that: “Financial markets cannot work alone and cannot regulate themselves.” Although no one has the figures, economic experts estimate that the international derivatives markets account for around $55 trillion dollars, an example of exponential usury.

The U.S. government put Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac under federal control, “the largest financial bailout in the nation’s history.” The two government sponsored enterprises (GSEs) presently own or guarantee almost half of the country’s $12 trillion in outstanding home mortgage debt.

The ongoing failure of millions of “sub-prime” mortgages with foreclosures across the country, the increasing reported lack of “affordable housing”, along with a consumer debt of $2.52 trillion, despite assurances by Wall Street, our president and big money that ” the economy is basically strong”, comes as no surprise to those who have watched Congress, again and again surrender to Wall Street lobbying over the past half century.

Back on June 23rd, 1947 a newly elected Republican Congress passed the Taft-Hartley Act over president Truman’s veto. The results of this assault on American labor made its appearance gradually over the years as American dads, who for decades had fed and clothed their families paid their mortgages, educated their kids and provided a safe retirement, found their paychecks no longer covered all the bills, and began to accept 50 or 60 hour weeks, or found a second job. A few years later mother joined the workforce to bring home needed cash.

The present huge pyramid of debt, both public and private was made possible by thirty years of Congress’ relentless deregulation of our financial markets, culminating, during the Clinton Administration, in the 1999 repeal of the Glass-Steagall Act, which Act had prohibited banks from dealing in high-risk securities. In effect, Washington supposed regulators had become passive enablers to Wall Street’s financial binge drinkers.

As columnist Robert Scheer pointed out (March 12th SF Chronicle): “The Clinton-backed Gramm-Leach-Baily Act of 1999 called the “Financial Services Modernization Act,” permitted banks, stock brokers, and insurance companies to merge and was exacerbated by Bush’s appointment of rapacious Corporate foxes to watch the corporate hen house.” They will take care of their own… Their action was made possible only by the federal government’s using your tax dollars to pick up the bad debt of the banks.” This act Clinton signed overturned the Glass-Steagall Act, a major regulatory achievement of the New Deal.

As Alex Cockburn, noted in THE NATION, (Oct. 13,2008), a yea after The Clinton-backed Gramm-Leach-Baily Act was signed into law: “Gramm, chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, attached a 262-page amendment to an omnibus appropriations bill right before Senate recess. Gramm’s amendment became the Commodity Futures Modernization Act which ok’d deregulation of investment banks, exempting most over-the-counter derivatives, credit derivatives, hedge funds and credit default swaps from regulatory scrutiny.”

Congress’ attempt to rein-in Wall Street’s reckless pursuit of sub prime money with the 1994 HOME OWNERSHIP AND EQUITY PROTECTION ACT, meant to police high-interest loans, proved ineffective.

A collaborating step down in the economic slide has been the not-too-subtle onslaught by the Credit-Card industry which began mailing their plastic cards out by the millions to unwary shoppers who, lacking enough cash at the Safeway checkout, found it increasingly easy to run that pretty piece of plastic through the machine. “In 2006 banks sent out 8 billion credit card applications, a 30% increase since 2005. Credit card companies now spend an average of $56 to sign up a new customer, and since 1996 when the Supreme Court struck down limits on credit card fees, the average late penalty has jumped 102% and the average fee for exceeding credit card limits rose 138%. Before long Americans found themselves with billions in credit-card debt (Mother Jones Sept 2007).

The acceptance by banks of sub-prime mortgages had begun over ten years ago as deregulation led to corporate theft in both Republican and Democratic administrations. In the past, mortgage holders who faced economic problems might go to their banker and negotiate changes in term limits or interest rates. Today their banker, who has bundled that mortgage along with a thousand others and is gambling with it on the international roulette wheel of “derivatives ” and “hedge funds, may say: “Sorry I just can’t lay my hands on your mortgage papers.”

Corporate corruption is present at the highest level. On April 1st, 2008 (Reuters) – An internal JP Morgan Chase (JPM) memo titled “Zippy Cheats & Tricks” offered a peek into those dubious lending tactics underpinning the housing market’s downward spiral. This A J.P. Morgan Chase internal memo titled: “Zippy Cheating Tricks”, sneaked to the press by an employee (who has since been fired), says it all: The piece was originally obtained by reporters at THE PORTLAND Oregonian newspaper who printed it on March 27th, 2008. The sneaked memo outlined in step-by-step instructions just how to beef up mortgage applicants’ statement s in order to qualify them for home loans they otherwise could not afford:

The instructions read as follows:
1. Make sure your assets input all income in base income. DO NOT break it down by overtime, commissions or bonus.

2. If your borrower is getting a gift, add it to a bank account along with the rest of the assets. Be sure to remove any mention of gift funds.

3. If you do not get (the desired results), try resubmitting with slightly higher income. Inch it up 500 to see if you can get the findings you want. Do the same for assets. Usury at its worse.

After Obama has closed Guantanamo and erased Bush’s “signing statements,” he still has a steep climb ahead. Will he be able to get a new Congress to intelligently weather the depression, our two wars, and return this country to the people? Not one of our politicians campaigning for the 2009 election, except Ralph Nader, mentioned that repeal of the Taft-Hartley Act should be on Congress’s agenda, and that a sales tax on “derivatives” would be a good idea. The restoration of Congressional monitoring of business, weakened by the Glas-Steagall Act’s has scarcely been mentioned. Cynthia Ann McKinney a former United States Representative and the 2008 Green Party nominee for President of the United States wants to abolish “derivatives”

Unlike Franklin D. Roosevelt, who faced the 1930s depression with a well-funded US treasury, Obama will be faced with a government trillions in debt while losing two wars. Congress must also halt the hemorrhaging of tax revenue by closing overseas tax shelters, revoke the Bush Jr. tax loopholes for the rich, and take the cap off Social Security contributions, forcing the wealthy to shoulder their fair share of our nation’s financial support. We need to collect a tariff on all goods manufactured abroad regardless of their corporate ownership. Today EU countries charge either a VAT (value-added tax) or tariff on imports from the US and other non-EU countries.

President Obama will face a Herculean task with reluctant Republicans and some Democratic leaders who are Republicans in drag. Wish him well!

IN CONCLUSION….(Dusty)

Now, I hope you will all click on Coastal Post’s homepage http://www.coastalpost.com/ and sample more of their ultra-independent periodic (monthly) offerings both in their printed and on-line versions. By contributing to their cause or subscribing to their on-line service (their commercial and advertising links are great), you’ll be exercising your own pro-American, anti-fascist privilege of free speech and defending theirs, which is currently under very unfriendly fire, right here in the good-ol U.S. of A…and in California of all states!

The Editors, writers and contributors of DeclaringIndependents.com herewith commend and laud Don Deane and his stalwart staff for hanging in there and telling the truth about America’s under-cover fascism. When it got to the point that opposing Bush’s illegal pre-emptive invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq was equated with “treason” and hailed as “un patriotic”, we knew we were in trouble. Even though Obama has successfully ousted this particular cabal of Judeo-Christian-Zionist fascists, the Zionist forces that took control of the Bush Pentagon in 2001 in the wake of 9/11 are still out there regrouping and waiting for the next chink in democracy’s armor that will enable them to unearth once again their insidious arc of Zionist covenant to control and re-structure the Middle East along Biblically-prophesied parameters. Anyone who questions Israel’s mission or its military machinations in Gaza and Palestine runs the risk of inciting the wrath of America’s grass-rooted constituency of Biblically-literal Zionists who will cite chapter and verse of said theocratic text to lay legal (not merely mythical) claim to all the real estate (including oil) situated between the Nile and Euphrates rivers in the “Holy Land”.

The mainstream American media is clearly hesitant to mention—much less criticize—Zionist Israeli military machinations in Gaza and Palestine, because, well, collective Gentile guilt regarding the Holocaust still renders the cow of Israel sacred and all political proddings in its direction….taboo. Well, to the direct contrary, the U.S. Constitution makes it every man’s privilege—and every educated man’s duty when morally required– to dissent publically when it comes to the majority view of …anything , including the sacred cows of Israeli Statehood and Zionist policy. DI (and its precursor think tank, the B.E.A., “Barristers et al”) have from the first championed those who on 9/11/01 began suggesting to Americans that they should accept some responsibility for the Twin Towers’ toppling on the basis of America’s military alliance with the State of Israel—and against all its many enemies- since 1948.

In reporting the “other side of the story” of what is presently occurring in Gaza and Palestine (see Coastal Post articles at the following links) http://www.coastalpost.com/08/12/11_N.html

http://www.coastalpost.com/08/12/05.html

http://www.coastalpost.com/08/12/11_N.html ) , the Coastal Post is being accused of being “anti-Semitic” and being judged and condemned as if the accusations were both tried and true. Opposing Israel’s military conduct in Gaza and Palestine is no more “anti-Semitic” than opposing Bush war policy in Iraq was “treason”.

Let’s forget about sacred cows and come to the aid of all good people who come to the aid of their country, as has the brave news paper in California called “The Coastal Post”.

War is still our only enemy.

Dear DI and B.E.A. staff, and friends,

In this open letter, I’m sending you the face of the “beast”. The beast with the #666 on its head. The featured essay (neo-con side) is the most persuasive argument in favor of our pursuing—and “winning”—Bush’s preemptive war on terrorism I have ever read. It is so frighteningly seductive in its references to the origins and seeming inevitabilities of wars in general, citing the causes and “solutions” to WWI and WWII that I classify it as among the finest pieces of (low-brow) neo-con-artistry (propaganda) written since 9/11/01. It’s “low-brow” propaganda that always decides wars and presidential elections, so don’t discount this forwarded sermon on the basis of its puerile intellectual prowess.

I addressed this letter to DI’s in-house historian and philosopher, Dr. Leonard Carrier, and transmitted it to the DI and B.E.A. Staff, contributors and friends for the purpose of provoking dialogue and soliciting comments in return. I will, by way of preview of Len Carrier’s essay on the war in Iraq and Iran share with you only this: (What I wrote to him after he responded with the wonderful essay that trails the initial (neocon) piece by Kraft:

Dear Len: This is—without doubt—the most beautifully concise—and comprehensively accurate–statement concerning the neo-cons’ war in the Middle East I have read to date. You should write more when you’re “ticked off”, my learned friend.

Bravo and kudos! Dusty

Back to you DI and B.E.A. readers and friends: I invite you (again) to reply to me at my e-mail address (Rschoch@triar.rr.com). I will collect and collate your replies and publish them all—without censorship– on the DI website in the order received, so that they will be added to the article here posted. Please don’t hesitate to reply just because you don’t consider yourself a history or foreign policy expert. All our opinions matter. In fact, our opinions (as Americans) are the only thing that really matter because war in the Middle East will continue…even to the end game of Armageddon unless we the people somehow develop, communicate and execute a consensus of opinion propounding peace.

The beast in this scenario has an appealing face. The writer–Raymond S. Kraft–is a neoconservative lawyer living in northern California who is one of the “30-percenters” who still believe that George W. Bush and Richard Cheney are correct in pursuing their wars in the Middle East. His pro-war sermon is seductive because he makes the notion of escalating the war in the Middle East seem attractive in comparison with the “history of our future” which he projects as forthcoming if we don’t heed his warning and his rallying call to …WAR!

If any of you want first to read my own account of how we got INTO this on-going war in the Middle East in order to read this call for its escalation in the context of its origins, please click on and review the “Free Book” on this site by clicking here.

If you’ll scan the cable TV programs now, and your own newspapers, you will find—everywhere—references to the call for escalating war from the ubiquitous pulpits of fundamentalist Christian evangelicals across our dumbed-down, neo-con-propaganda-brain-washed nation, making Bush’s “surge” in Iraq and his saber rattling towards Iran appear to be nothing short of GOD’S WILL. The American public (red state portion) is being herded , sheep-like to the brink of losing all resistance to the call for war in the Middle East, because the war against “jihad Islam” is being painted as the “End-Times War of Armageddon” as forecast in the New Testament. And the scary thing is that both Democrats and Republicans are so afraid of losing the votes of these Christian Fundies that none of them will dare take a stand and say that their call for Rapture through a call for escalated war is as Anti-Christian as any proposal since the snake’s beckonings in Eden.

Combining the Old Testament mythology about God’s promising Jews all the land between the Nile and Euphrates with the Jews’ (the theological basis for the 1948 Declaration of Statehood for Israel in the heart of Islamic darkness) and Gentiles’ John (of Patmos Isle fame) forecast of an end-time war of Satan and God, and New Testament promise of Jesus’ Rapturous return thereafter (along with infidels being “left behind”) you have a formula for disaster. International disaster because, in truth, just as Raymond Craft warns us, end-time nuclear war machines are in fact at large…and are now capable of fulfilling Biblical prophesy—quite literally.

But that possibility—I insist—and beg you to believe along with me—is not God’s plan…and it has certainly never been the plan of Jesus Christ who professed until his earthly departure that He came to save us…from each other and ourselves.

The trouble is, that most of these doomsday weapons (nukes) are in American hands, and it’s Americans who are gearing up to use them…preemptively…(e.g. limited-yield bunker nukes) in order that the same nuclear power will not be used in the hands of Satan (which would be the Wahhabee-Jihad Islamics…those alleged Satanic bugaboos of the Christian Fundamentalists’ call to preemptive war. )

Now, Len (I’m directing the following questions to Dr. Leonard Carrier, professor of History and Philosophy, of Asheville, NC), I’d like you (and the rest who receive this communication) to respond, in what ever order you choose, to both Kraft’s piece and what I will hereafter write as further predicate thereto.

Kraft contends that the only way to prevent this alleged Islamic Fascist force (albeit a tactic as opposed to either a nation state or either visible or corporeal organization) from conquering and/or simply destroying the world (I suppose with suitcase nukes well placed) is to continue to escalate and “win” the war on terror which Bush began in the Middle East. This guy is literally—and skillfully–advising us to resolve to consummate the restructuring of the Middle East by conquests of Iraq, Iran, Syria etc…just as called for in the widely-unknown Jewish Mein Kampf treatise I argued constitutes the blueprint and animus of Bush’s preemptive invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq, which would be the paper entitled “A Clean Break” penned by A.E.I. and PNAC members David and Mayrev Wurmser (and other Jews) which is described again in my little free book mentioned (and linked) above.

Len, what I’d like to hear from you, in addition to your response to Kraft’s proposal, is in essence this:

In fact has there been in the past century more than one war? Aren’t the martial monikers “WWI”, “WWII” , “Korean Conflict”, “Viet Nam War” , “Bay of Pigs” , “Desert Storm”, “War in Afghanistan”, “War in Iraq”, “War on Terror”….all synonyms or sub-chapter titles for the same, perennial and on-going conflict, with only a few changes of guards and rallying cries? Aren’t all these “events” simply karmic dominoes in the same stupid quest for power and dominance in a world turned from agrarian tribes to industrially-globalized and greedy conglomerates?

Isn’t there a strong historic case to be built for the argument that there has, in industrial times, been only one war…and the wager (the pre-emptive instigator) has been only nominally a leader or a leading nation, and in fact has been the group who have risen to power in order to defend themselves against the ones who had more power before them and abused them with it? Isn’t it simply a matter of the victims becoming oppressors once they have achieved the power to counter the oppression of their own predecessor bullies? Isn’t it the same circular karma that led the perpetrators of early genocide (Old Testament Jews traversing Arab territories in pursuit of god-promised real estate and en route killing “every man, woman, child, 4-legged animal and chicken” standing in the way…to wind up themselves victims of genocide in Europe—and now the Middle East–4000 years later?).

Haven’t the “victims” of WWI and WWII (the English with their American, Russian and French allies) become oppressors of the Middle Eastern (and all weaker) states…simply as a natural result of first acquiring the power to defeat the power of their “fascist” oppressors only to fall victim to the absolute power that corrupts absolutely, and becoming fascist in the process? Don’t’ forget- Russia invaded the Middle East first (their failed invasion of Afghanistan).

At the close of WWII, Americans were victims (yes, we remember Pearl Harbor) first, strengthened victors second, and finally industrial and nuclear powerhouse of the universe. Only Russia’s nuclear arsenal can (and) did subdue and temper America’s use and abuse of its nuclear power, making the recent (and still—no matter what they say– simmering “cold war”) the least destructive episode in the century of war…given the potential for destruction and international mayhem.

This is an EXCELLENT essay– Well thought out and presented. Historical Significance

Sixty-three years ago, Nazi Germany had overrun almost all of Europe and hammered England to the verge of bankruptcy and defeat. The Nazis had sunk more than 400 British ships in their convoys between England and America taking food and war materials.

At that time the US was in an isolationist, pacifist mood, and most Americans wanted nothing to do with the European or the Asian war.

Then along came Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 , and in outrage Congress unanimously declared war on Japan , and the following day on Germany , who had not yet attacked us It was a dicey thing. We had few allies.

France was not an ally, as the Vichy government of France quickly aligned itself with its German occupiers. Germany was certainly not an ally, as Hitler was intent on setting up a Thousand Year Reich in Europe . Japan was not an ally, as it was well on its way to owning and controlling all of Asia .

Together, Japan and Germany had long-range plans of invading Canada and Mexico , as launching pads to get into the United States over our northern and southern borders, after they finished gaining control of Asia and Europe .

America ‘s only allies then were England , Ireland , Scotland , Canada , Australia , and Russia That was about it All of Europe, from Norway to Italy (except Russia in the East) was already under the Nazi heel.

The US was certainly not prepared for war. The US had drastically downgraded most of its military forces after WW I because of the depression, so that at the outbreak of WW II, Army units were training with broomsticks because they didn’t have guns, and cars with “tank” painted on the doors because they didn’t have real tanks A huge chunk of our Navy had just been sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor.

Britain had already gone bankrupt, saved only by the donation of $600 million in gold bullion in the Bank of England (that was actually the property of Belgium ) given by Belgium to England to carry on the war when Belgium was overrun by Hitler (a little known fact).

Actually, Belgium surrendered on one day, because it was unable to oppose the German invasion, and the Germans bombed Brussels into rubble the next day just to prove they could.

Britain had already been holding out for two years in the face of staggering losses and the near decimation of its Royal Air Force in the Battle of Britain, and was saved from being overrun by Germany only because Hitler made the mistake of thinking the Brits were a relatively minor threat that could be dealt with later. Hitler, first turned his attention to Russia , in the late summer of 1940 at a time when England was on the verge of collapse.

Ironically, Russia saved America ‘s butt by putting up a desperate fight for two years, until the US got geared up to begin hammering away at Germany .

Russia lost something like 24,000,000 people in the sieges of Stalingrad and Moscow alone . . . 90% of them from cold and starvation, mostly civilians, but also more than a 1,000,000 soldiers

Had Russia surrendered, Hitler would have been able to focus his entire war effort against the Brits, then America. If that had happened, the Nazis could possibly have won the war.

All of this has been brought out to illustrate that turning points in history are often dicey things. Now, we find ourselves at another one of those key moments in history.

There is a very dangerous minority in Islam that either has, or wants, and may soon have, the ability to deliver small nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons, almost anywhere in the world.

The Jihadis, the militant Muslims, are basically Nazis in Kaffiyahs — they believe that Islam, a radically conservative form of Wahhabi Islam, should own and control the Middle East first, then Europe, then the world. To them, all who do not bow to their will of thinking should be killed, enslaved, or subjugated. They want to finish the Holocaust, destroy Israel , and purge the world of Jews. This is their mantra . (goal)

There is also a civil war raging in the Middle East — for the most part not a hot war, but a war of ideas. Islam is having its Inquisition and its Reformation, but it is not yet known which side will win — the Inquisitors, or the Reformationists.

If the Inquisition wins, then the Wahhabis, the Jihadis, will control the Middle East, the OPEC oil, and the US , European, and Asian economies.

The techno-industrial economies will be at the mercy of OPEC — not an OPEC dominated by the educated, rational Saudis of today, but an OPEC dominated by the Jihadis. Do you want gas in your car? Do you want heating oil next winter? Do you want the dollar to be worth anything? You had better hope the Jihad, the Muslim Inquisition, loses, and the Islamic Reformation wins.

If the Reformation movement wins, that is, the moderate Muslims who believe that Islam can respect and tolerate other religions, live in peace with the rest of the world, and move out of the 10th century into the 21st, then the troubles in the Middle East will eventually fade away. A moderate and prosperous Middle East will emerge.

We have to help the Reformation win, and to do that we have to fight the Inquisition, i. e. the Wahhabi movement, the Jihad, Al Qaeda and the Islamic terrorist movements. We have to do it somewhere. We can’t do it everywhere at once. We have created a focal point for the battle at a time and place of our choosing . . . . . . . in Iraq Not in New York , not in London , or Paris or Berlin , but in Iraq , where we are doing two important things.

(1) We deposed Saddam Hussein. Whether Saddam Hussein was directly involved in the 9/11 terrorist attack or not, it is undisputed that Saddam has been actively supporting the terrorist movement for decades Saddam is a terrorist! Saddam is, or was, a weapon of mass destruction, responsible for the deaths of probably more than a 1,000,000 Iraqis and 2,000,000 Iranians.

(2) We created a battle, a confrontation, a flash point, with Islamic terrorism in Iraq . We have focused the battle. We are killing bad people, and the ones we get there we won’t have to get here. We also have a good shot at creating a democratic, peaceful Iraq , which will be a catalyst for democratic change in the rest of the Middle East, and an outpost for a stabilizing American military presence in the Middle East for as long as it is needed.

WW II, the war with the Japanese and German Nazis, really began with a “whimper” in 1928. It did not begin with Pearl Harbor . It began with the Japanese invasion of China . It was a war for fourteen years before the US joined it. It officially ended in 1945 — a 17 year war — and was followed by another decade of US occupation in Germany and Japan to get those countries reconstructed and running on their own again . . . a 27 year war.

WW II cost the United States an amount equal to approximately a full year’s GDP — adjusted for inflation, equal to about $12 trillion dollars. WW II cost America more than 400,000 soldiers killed in action, and nearly 100,000 still missing in action.

The Iraq war has, so far, cost the United States about $160,000,000,000, which is roughly what the 9/11 terrorist attack cost New York. It has also cost about 3,000 American lives, which is roughly equivalent to lives that the Jihad killed (within the United States ) in the 9/11 terrorist attack.

The cost of not fighting and winning WW II would have been unimaginably greater — a world dominated by Japanese Imperialism and German Nazism.

This is not a 60-Minutes TV show, or a 2-hour movie in which everything comes out okay. The real world is not like that. It is messy, uncertain, and sometimes bloody and ugly. It always has been, and probably always will be.

The bottom line is that we will have to deal with Islamic terrorism until we defeat it, whenever that is. It will not go away if we ignore it.

If the US can create a reasonably democratic and stable Iraq , then we have an ally, like England , in the Middle East, a platform, from which we can work to help modernize and moderate the Middle East . The history of the world is the clash between the forces of relative civility and civilization, and the barbarians clamoring at the gates to conquer the world.

The Iraq War is merely another battle in this ancient and never ending war. Now, for the first time ever, the barbarians are about to get nuclear weapons. Unless somebody prevents them from getting them.

We have four options:

1 . We can defeat the Jihad now, before it gets nuclear weapons.

2 . We can fight the Jihad later, after it gets nuclear weapons (which may be as early as next year, if Iran ‘s progress on nuclear weapons is what Iran claims it is).

3 . We can surrender to the Jihad and accept its dominance in the Middle East now; in Europe in the next few years or decades, and ultimately in America .

OR

4 . We can stand down now, and pick up the fight later when the Jihad is more widespread and better armed, perhaps after the Jihad has dominated France and Germany and possibly most of the rest of Europe . It will, of course, be more dangerous, more expensive, and much bloodier.

If you oppose this war, I hope you like the idea that your children, or grandchildren, may live in an Islamic America under the Mullahs and the Sharia, an America that resembles Iran today.

The history of the world is the history of civilization clashes, cultural clashes. All wars are about ideas, ideas about what society and civilization should be like, and the most determined always win.

Those who are willing to be the most ruthless always win. The pacifists always lose, because the anti-pacifists kill them.

Remember, perspective is every thing, and America ‘s schools teach too little history for perspective to be clear, especially in the young American mind.

The Cold War lasted from about 1947 at least until the Berlin Wall came down in 1989; forty-two years!

Europe spent the first half of the 19th century fighting Napoleon, and from 1870 to 1945 fighting Germany !

World War II began in 1928, lasted 17 years, plus a ten year occupation, and the US still has troops in Germany and Japan World War II resulted in the death of more than 50,000,000 people, maybe more than 100,000,000 people, depending on which estimates you accept.

The US has taken more than 3,000 killed in action in Iraq . The US took more than 4,000 killed in action on the morning of June 6, 1944 , the first day of the Normandy Invasion to rid Europe of Nazi Imperialism.

In WW II the US averaged 2,000 KIA a week — for four years. Most of the individual battles of WW II lost more Americans than the entire Iraq war has done so far.

The stakes are at least as high . . A world dominated by representative governments with civil rights, human rights, and personal freedoms . . or a world dominated by a radical Islamic Wahhabi movement, by the Jihad, under the Mullahs and the Sharia (Islamic law) .

It’s difficult to understand why the average American does not grasp this. They favor human rights, civil rights, liberty and freedom, but evidently not for Iraqis.

“Peace Activists” always seem to demonstrate here in America , where it’s safe.

Why don’t we see Peace Activist demonstrating in Iran , Syria , Iraq , Sudan , North Korea , in the places that really need peace activism the most? I’ll tell you why! They would be killed!

The liberal mentality is supposed to favor human rights, civil rights, democracy, multiculturalism, diversity, etc., but if the Jihad wins, wherever the Jihad wins, it is the end of civil rights, human rights, democracy, multiculturalism, diversity, etc.

Americans who oppose the liberation of Iraq are coming down on the side of their own worst enemy!

Bush and Richard Cheney are correct in pursuing their wars in the Middle East. I say “wars” because they don’t want to stop with Iraq and Afghanistan. They want to take the attacks into Iran and Syria. According to Kraft, this is a good idea, because we are battling the forces of “Islamofascism,” a cumbersome term that was coined by warmongers who were ignorant of its meaning. Someone who believes in Islam believes in a religion. Someone who believes in fascism believes that big business and the government should, in concert, run the country. So fascism has nothing to do with religion, even though fascists employ religion to get the people in line, as Mussolini did in Italy in the 1920s..

Kraft and his idolater, Marvin Parchman, think that they can conjure up images of World War II to make it seem as if that conflict

could make our brutal invasion and occupation of Iraq seem honorable. Any rational person can see that it is not the same thing. Hitler invaded Poland and then the U.S.S.R. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor. We fought back. Fast forward to 2003. In response to a criminal attack on the World Trade Center, mainly by Saudis and Egyptians, we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq — countries that had nothing to do with the hijacking of airplanes and flying them into our buildings. More than 200 Yemenis died in that attack on us, as well as hundreds of others who were not Americans. So the Bush/Cheney response to that attack was not only ill-conceived, it was ill-concealed. That means that the Bush Administration was intent on attacking Iraq, and the attack of disaffected Muslims on our territory was the perfect excuse to grab for Iraqi oil. We all now know that this was the intent. The nonsense about “weapons of mass destruction” was a lie fed to the Congress and the American public so that the Bush and his corporate cronies could gain control of the oil in the Middle East.

This is also why these same corporate warmongers want to find an excuse to attack Iran. It’s all about the oil. People like Kraft, Parchman, and Norman Podhoretz, try to make it sound as if we are in some gigantic ”clash of civilizations,” and that if we don’t fight the radical Muslims, we will be submerged. This is blatant propaganda. Radical Muslims form a minute part of Islam, although our invasion of Iraq has gained many more fighters to their cause. The reason is simple. If you demonize a religion, then there will be plenty of those pushing back against the demonization. There is also another, even more sinister reason, for people like Kraft and Podhoretz to try to convince the American public that we are in a “war on terror.” This is because they support the imperialistic policies of Israel, and its attempts, not only to be the only nuclear bully in the Middle East, but to occupy all of the West Bank and to dispossess the Palestinians of land that is rightfully theirs. To further these efforts, the effective Israeli lobbying machine, AIPAC, has cowed our Congress so much that they acquiesce to every demand made on behalf of Israel, despite the fact that Israel refuses to make peace with the Arabs, and lies about it by saying that Arab initiatives are never enough. It is curious that certain Christian fundamentalists are allied with Israel in their imperialistic ventures — not because they want the Jews to control all of Palestine, but because they think that this will lead to Armageddon and rapture. This is again, blatant nonsense, and people who fall for it are hopefully few, because if very many people were to fall prey to such a con job, there would really be no future for the human race.

No, despite all the religious mumbo-jumbo, and all the scare tactics employed by people such as Kraft, Parchman, and Podhoretz (as well as the Kagans, the Libbys, the Boltons, and all the other neoconservative vermin), the simple fact is that this smokescreen about a “clash of civilizations” is simply meant to cover up an imperialist grab for the resources of other countries. The American people need to wake up to this fact, to rip away the prattle that the lackeys of war and profit use to seduce the citizenry, and to tell these greedy, corporate drones that we can see through their deceptions. It’s time to take back our country, to stress cooperation rather than conflict, and to dismiss the purveyors of greed and war back into the shadows where they belong.

As for Dusty’s question about war in general, and specifically whether I see the war in the Middle East from the historical standpoint as merely the current chapter in the same war story begun at the turn of the 20th Century, I’ll do my best to respond in a manageable number of words.

With so many examples to the contrary, it’s probably naïve to say that humans are rational animals. Another account seems more plausible, which is to say that humans are classifying animals. Aristotle led the way in this endeavor. We like to sort things out into neat pigeonholes, so as to try to understand them better. We do the same with wars.

Since just before the turn of the century, classifiers have sorted out wars with names like the Spanish-American war, World War I, World War II, the Korean War (which the Chinese call the Sino-American War), the Vietnam War, the Cold War, Gulf War I, the Afghan War, the Iraq War (the last two conveniently described as mere battles in the ongoing War on Terror)—and these are only the wars that the United States has fought in. There have been others, such as the 1905 war between Russia and Japan, the several wars fought between Israel and the Arab States starting in 1948, and the numerous wars fought in Africa among rival tribes.

Aside from the fact that in all these wars people killed and were killed, is there any common thread that ties all these wars together? Simply put, I think that in each case there has been an aggressor and one who has been the recipient of aggression. The reasons vary, whether it was our ridding the Caribbean of Spanish influence in 1898, Serbian unrest during the last days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, the brutal demand for lebensraum by Hitler in the 1930s, or the lust for Iraqi oil that led to our invasion of Iraq in 2003. In each case, some countries wanted what others had, and were willing to fight and die to get it. So, if we like, we can say that from 1898 to the present time, there has been but one war with pauses between its episodes.

Norman Podhoretz has made it even simpler by classifying our World Wars for us in the pages of Commentary magazine. World Wars I and II we’ve already classified. World War III is the Cold War. World War IV, according to Podhoretz is our present “War on Terror,” which is also described as a clash of civilizations between the West and the radical followers of Islam. According to Podhoretz, this last war is one that promises to continue for a long time, and it is one that the West cannot afford to lose.

Andrew Bacevich uses Podhoretz’s classificatory scheme, but has a more realistic interpretation. According to Bacevich (“The Real World War IV,” The Wilson Quarterly,Winter 2005), Jimmy Carter started World War IV in 1980, when he declared the Middle East to be a region of our national interest. This was after the oil shortages of the late 70s, and in contrast to Carter’s earlier statements that we needed to conserve energy and live within our means. In other words, according to Bacevich, World War IV is a war for oil. The Kuwait War was a battle in that war, and so was our invasion of Iraq. What has helped to fuel this war has been an increasingly militaristic attitude adopted by our leadership, starting with Ronald Reagan. We have used more and more of our tax dollars to increase our military budget; and, what’s worse, we have borrowed funds from China and Japan to finance our war, leading to a precipitous drop in the value of our dollar. In fact, the dollar has dropped so much that OPEC countries are now thinking of pegging oil to the euro. If that happens our dollar will no longer be the world’s reserve currency. If the Chinese and Japanese decide to dump our bonds on the market, it will lead to hyperinflation, and subsequently to an economic depression.

The best way to end World War IV would be to hearken back to Jimmy Carter’s advice before he decided to initiate a war for oil. Get over our addiction to oil. Develop alternative energy sources. Cut back on military spending. Institute, as Dennis Kucinich has urged, a Department of Peace that uses diplomacy to resolve international conflicts. Above all, do not act as if the rest of the world exists only to enhance our creature comforts. In any case World War IV will not be resolved on the field of battle. To think that it will, as Podhoretz seems to think, is to be subject to delusion. To insist that military force will prevail, and to keep borrowing and spending for weapons of war, will bring World War IV to another sort of close, one in which our nation is impoverished and diminished in strength and stature.

It is alarming that the state of being at war no longer polarizes our nation, but rather puts us at odds with one another. What begins as a seemingly benign contest of urinating for distance, goes through the gamut of penis envy, then the really big guns come out.

My pet theory is that evolution and creation are events that have co-existed since the days of Adam and Eve AND there is plenty of evidence to support this claim…. add to the plethora of ancient human archeological evidence the introduction of Cain’s wife into Judeo-Christian lore, if you please.

By DW Foreign-policy Editor, Dusty Schoch

It’s all over – all except for 16 more months of “face saving” inevitably to flow from Bush, using his military patsy (Petreus) to betray us into believing it’s not all over.

The saving “surge” is clearly a failure. More Americans and Iraqi’s are dying on all fronts. So how can I contend the corporations are “winning”? Just look at the numbers—that is the dollars and sense:

Ever asked yourself why there is virtually no news coverage on the issue of Iraq’s only source of revenue…oil? Regardless of the question, the answer is NOBODY KNOWS…for sure. For everybody’s information, although Bush promised us that laws would be enacted in Iraq whereby oil revenues would be shared by all citizens of Iraq, this has not happened and is never likely to ever happen. The question is…what has been happening for the 6 years we have occupied Iraq? Where have the billions in oil revenues gone and where will they go in the future?

The only SURE thing is that as America’s armed forces and so-called “insurgents” continue to die as the war continues to wind down, we all know it’s just a matter of time before American troops are withdrawn, and hell will break loose in this land of warring Islamic tribes.

And in the meantime, American dollars (ours) will continue to flow into Iraq, where the only ones profiting from our presence there are the American and British oil companies (and Halliburton-type “reconstruction” enterprises, and “Blackwater USA-type paramilitary corporations…all on our taxpayer payrolls.)

How big are those numbers? You might think we’re paying just for the 170,000 military troops we presently have over there. But we’re really paying for nearly twice that. There are now 137,000 “contractors” (Blackwater type paramilitary) we’re also paying….such that our total military occupation (civil and military) numbers 307,000…and that, my friends is one out of every thousand Americans. Do the math. One out of every thousand of us are now in Iraq, making war.

What is that war costing us on a per-capita basis? Well, figuring only what Bush has just asked Congress for the next year ($190 Billion of our money) it amounts to $633 from every American for next year alone. Money we’re spending on a war we’re losing.

But not the Corporations. Halliburton and Blackwater are still raking it in, and will continue raking it in until the bitter end of our inevitable withdrawal, upon which Bush will certainly declare that our soldiers had victory in their grasp but are “stabbed in the back by the peacemakers back home, yadayadaydada” echoing the same lame lines the politicians handed us when we withdrew from our equally ill-advised war in Viet Nam.

But, as much as the Corporations are successfully war-bucking in Iraq, we can also look to their cash flow for the very signs that, while they are “winning” the dollars, we are losing the war. Most salient in the “dollar signs” out there is the story of Hunt Oil.

Ray L. Hunt, C.E.O. and President of Hunt Oil Company (of Dallas Texas…surprise, surprise!!), just last month (August, 2007) signed an oil-sharing production deal with Kurdistan. Think about what that means. Do you think maybe Hunt Oil has some “inside intel”…and that maybe that “inside intel” is that there will be no Iraq Government, per se, when we leave…and we are certainly in the process of leaving. Even Bush is comparing Iraq to Viet Nam now, though he scoffed at such parallels for each of the first 5 years we were at war in Iraq.

Is it just a “coincidence” that this same owner of Hunt Oil in Texas is a member of Bush’s “Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board” (and therefore, clearly a friend and crony, because everyone knows Bush hires only cronies)?

The fact that Bush cronies are now transacting oil business with provisional governments in Iraq OTHER THAN THE CENTRAL GOVERNMENT WE ESTABLISHED, clearly shows the war to establish and empower that “democratic regime” is LOST.

But not “lost” in terms of corporate profits and ultimate bottom-line “out-come”.

At this moment (2:20 PM, Sept. 27, 2007), Halliburton, Blackwater and Hunt Oil are raking in huge profits…in the billions, while you and I are paying billions ($633 apiece for the coming year alone) to enable these war criminals to continue their blood-for-oil profiteering.

Wouldn’t this be sufficient to secure Hunt Oil’s oil deal with Kurdistan? At present, neither President Bush nor General Petreus have any control over what the paramilitaries do, although they claim they are “working on it”, since recently reported cases show that wholesale murder is part and parcel of their general corporate modus operandum in Iraq.

The diplomatic conclave American Forces constructed in Iraq is the largest and most secure of its kind in the world. It was not built at the war’s inception because Bush was that determined to democratize Iraq and save its abused women and poor from a tyrant.

“All About Money and Power”

By DW In-House Historian and Philosopher, Dr. Leonard Carrier

Don Imus stepped over the line, but he was just offering a riposte to a comment one of his cohorts made about the Rutgers women’s basketball team. They thought it was funny, just like some of the other crude comments they make about celebrities every day–except these women weren’t fair game, because they were just college kids playing the game of basketball. If Imus had used the phrase, “nappy-headed ho” to describe the rapster Snoop Dogg, then there wouldn’t have been any cause for apology. He would not only have been accurate, his remark might even have been considered funny. Snoop thinks that he has the right to demean black women with his raptster videos whereas Imus doesn’t have that right. Snoop is wrong; nobody has that right–yet the people who make money on Snoop’s recordings don’t seem to care. Where is the outrage from women’s organizations ? They should be leading a boycott against Snoop’s albums, including his latest CD, The Big Squeeze.

Some people don’t like “shock jock” radio or television. That’s fine. Just turn the channel. What happened to Imus after his unfortunate remark shows how hypocritical Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, and Snoop really are. Remember, it was Sharpton and Jackson, that dynamic duo, who jumped on Joe Biden for calling Barack Obama “clean” and “articulate.” Who are they to be the gatekeepers of political correctness? Where were Sharpton’s apologies to the Duke lacrosse team for slandering them after all charges were dropped? We all remember Jackson’s “hymietown” slurs against Jews, as well. Why aren’t Sharpton and Jackson deploring Snoop’s recordings? Could it be that it’s because Snoop is black, and it’s all right for black men to make money defaming women? Even worse are the sanctimonious statements of people such William F.Buckley, who described Imus’s firing as a “return to decency.” If the Buckleys in our country were really concerned about decency, they would use Imus’s mistake as a platform for launching a serious discussion about race in the United States, instead of merely pointing their fingers and saying “shame.”

The worst offenders in this mess are the heads of CBS and NBC. First they demanded apologies, which Imus contritely issued. Then they gave him a suspension. Finally, when the PC crowd really got loud, and sponsors threatened to pull ads, they fired him. What a cowardly, gutless thing to do! The irreverent Imus, despite his iconoclasm, was actually one of the few commentators who made sharply critical comments about the political scene. Many politicians were on the receiving end of his well-deserved zingers–including George H.W. Bush for his meager charitable contributions. Even if you didn’t agree with him, you knew he wasn’t going to pull any punches. With Imus gone–and before him Howard Stern on radio–we aren’t going to get anything on our corporate stations except pabulum. One wishes that CBS and NBC had been so protective of viewers’ sensibilities when they helped to cheerlead for the invasion of Iraq. Their response to Imus did not reflect a concern for decency. Rather, it reflected a concern for money. Although we would still object, we could better cope with Imus’s dismissal if those who fired him had been honest and admitted that their decision was based on a concern for money and power.
What should have happened in Imus’s case was simply his public apology to the Rutgers women’s basketball team. He issued that apology early on, and it was graciously accepted. That should have been it. But that wasn’t it, and we’ll all be the poorer for it by not having access to Imus’s dissenting opinions. If you’re like me and are really ticked off about their false piety and money-grubbing behavior, I suggest that you keep watching CBS and NBC just so you can boycott the products of every single advertiser that pressed those stations to fire Imus.

Imus’s firing has deprived us of an honest dialogue about racial bias. We have lost an opportunity to witness public contrition and insight from someone who is now forced to endure his shame in silence. Without his voice this issue becomes another embarrassing page in history, except for the Sharptons and Jacksons who will squeeze as much dishonest propaganda from it as they can. All of us need to understand what motivated Don Imus’s behavior so that we can better understand our own. The brave young women of Rutgers knew that instinctively when they asked to meet with him. That they chose to forgive him should have set an example for the rest of us.

I FEEL … I MUS

By: DW Foreign Policy Editor, Dusty Schoch

Who are the bigger fools, after all—the fools who issue racist remarks or the fools who make a bigger deal out of it? I’m neither a fan of Imus nor do I approve of his careless and rude references to Rutger’s Basketball squad as being “nappy-headed ho’s”. Having said that, and at the risk of appearing the bigger fool, I’m tossing my two bits in this current racial brouhaha for two reasons of principle concern: (1) I believe Imus’ firing by CBS was patently unjust and motivated more by dollars than principle, and (2) I believe current media commentators are missing the most salient point in the controversy which is that Imus, and our white majority are the victims of reverse discrimination in matters of racial “taboos” and blacks alone can—and should—fix this situation.

What should you do when the KKK threatens to exercise their Constitutionally-guaranteed right to parade (with proper permit) through your peaceful hometown? Options: Stage a media-filmed counter-culture display of contempt for the KKK? Secretly invite the old-guard Panther Party or Black Muslims to come and throw stones or worse? Seed the clouds on parade day to make it rain on the hooded ones?

The answer is simple and none of the above. The answer is — don’t go.

The KKK is beneath any enlightened contempt and any call for concerted opposition to their long-collapsed clan effort to keep the black race “in their place” has long ended. The hooded ones are a joke, and responding to their dying displays of Albino-Alamo bravado with anything but indifference is aiding and abetting their still hideous cause, defunct or otherwise.

The same with racial minutia such as Imus’ verbal ejaculation. His firing and career termination is just as lop-sided silly and over-reactionary as was the firing of Jimmy the Greek for simply stating the truth about black athletes in the prior decade. Jimmy (the legit gambling syndicate’s odd’s setter) stated simply and truly that black athletes are physically superior in America at least partly due to their selective breeding during times of slavery. If any of that assertion was subject to anthropological or genetic debate, it was still far short of being a hate-filled or hate-mongering remark in any way demeaning the black race.

But that didn’t stop the black community and it’s quick-draw demagogic spokesmen from doing to Jimmy what was just done to poor shock-jock, Imus. When someone white slips and uses the “N-word” in public, he’s as good as dead if he’s either a politician or a public figure, because all politicians and public figures serve at the will of the corporations, and the corporations serve at the will of the media, because the media serves the will of the dollar, and anything that might DEVALUE or DIMINISH a broadcasting company’s (or their dollar-supplying advertising clients) IMAGE will cause that company to immediately canibalize any human in their midst, in order to nip the flow of lost dollars in the bud. They’ve gotta kill him before Neilson’s dollar dogma kills them.

In poor Imus’ case, he was fired before he had time to apologize for his words.

Please don’t get me wrong- I don’t care a fig about Jimmy the Greek, Imus or that Seinfeld Show comic who all caught the quick ax for racially-slurring slips of tongue. But the principle of the trend is odious and…as far as America’s image as a culture (if Bush has in fact left us with any) is concerned, it makes us all look like a bunch of robotic, neurotic, shame-ridden idiots. Not to mention, in our over-kill, inverse-discriminating behavior, just plain un-just. Not to mention hypocritical.

Black people, especially comics, are regularly granted carte-blanch in referring to white folks as “honkey”, “cracker”, “whitie” and if you’re artistically poverty-stricken enough to audit their “Def Comedy Jams” on TV, or rap “music”, you’ll find hundreds of demeaning if not openly-explicative names for Caucasian Americans pouring out like a spring of artesian insult. And where is the backlash from the insulted white race? They (blacks) regularly use, and claim exclusive dominion in regard to the term, “nigger”, whereas they invariably insist “whitie” use the euphemized “N-word”.

In direct regard to Imus’ career-terminating transgression, I submit there was nothing “racist” (i.e., racially insulting or hateful) about what he did or said. He referred to the black Rutger’s basketball team as “nappy-headed ho’s”. He compared their looks to the (predominantly black) members of another team and said the latter were better looking. “Nappy” in Webster’s has absolutely no negative definition, denotation or connotation. “Nappy” is defined as “covered with nap, or ‘downy’ “. The root word, “nap” is defined as “having a downy coating”, or “referring to the short and fuzzy ends of certain cloth.” African Americans are normally darker in color than Caucasian Americans. This is no “stereotypical slander”; this is genetic and anthropological reality. The hair (covering the head) of African Americans in general, and specifically the hair covering the heads of one or more of the Rutger’s team can be, without insult or any negative intent be characterized as “nappy”. Accordingly, the term, “nappy headed” is in no way a racial or reputational slur, unless you’re brain-challenged enough to buy into the implication that, as with “nigger”, only black males have the right to refer to black women with such “racially-exclusive” terms of ironic endearment (which they appear to be when black rappers refer to their own significant others as “nappy headed” , “ho’s” and “bitches”, which many of them do, incessantly).

Bottom line to Imus’ tar and feathering was, had the statement been issued publicly by a black person, no one would have noticed. I repeat: No one would have faulted (or fired) a black man for referring to these lady ball players as “nappy-headed ho’s”. That, ladies and gents, ho’s, pimps and bitches everywhere, is hypocrisy and reverse discrimination at their most ridiculous.

IT’S JUST LIKE THE “N-Word” PROBLEM….

The Imus case centered around a white man’s use of racially “taboo” words. It’s a twisted and one-sided bias, perhaps best epitomized by the arch-evil…. “N-word” – You know- the word so “bad” we can’t even say it hypothetically. What a silly and sad set of affairs—this aberrant cultural Mexican standoff over a two-syllable word. Compared to the “N-word”, “nappy” “ho” are minor-league race cards. So, from this point on, I’m using Imus’ “nappy ho” heave-ho as a stepping stone to a consideration of the unspeakable word that dwarfs all the other racially taboo words – “nigger”. Saying “nappy ho” over American airwaves got Imus summarily fired. Saying the word I just wrote, I submit, might have gotten him killed. Maybe even “legally”. Stay with me a while. This is important stuff.

The solution to this insanity? None immediately possible because the blacks don’t want a solution. The blacks could easily take the power of the “n-word” away by simply and officially and collectively agreeing—and proclaiming– not to take offense at it. By continuing to maintain that they have been “wounded” by the utterance of the word “nigger”, they continually, willfully and purposefully assign and invest destructive power in the word. If they regularly walked up to white people (intelligent and red-neck alike) and said, “call me ‘nigger’ if you like—After all, it’s just a diminutive of an archaic adjective derived from the country of origin for many African Americans, that being Nigeria. The word “nigger” simply denotes that we are members of that descended and evolved race.”

Racial game over. If blacks simply “allowed” bigoted and non-bigoted people of any race to use the word, the word would have no power. It has power only because the blacks continue to insist it is “taboo”. It is taboo and powerful and damaging only because they continue to take offense. There are no words that Caucasians can claim (or choose) that have a similar effect or offensive impact. Why do you suppose that is? It’s simply because Caucasians feel and have resolved to continue to feel that there is no word that can be used to demean them that does no more than denominate or refer to them as Caucasian. The word, “Nigger” in fact does nothing more than denote the race of the one referred to.

For the past hundred years, black Americans have decided to cling to their position that there was insult warranting their “resentment” inherent first in “nigger”, then in the more old-south-polite, “darkie”, thereafter in the more politically-correct “negro’, and still longer thereafter more politically-correct “colored”, which was thereafter deemed less accurate and therefore more offensive than their “true” color label. “Black” was collectively OK for a short time last decade, and now it appears there’s only one appropriate way for a white to refer to a black in the U.S., that being “African American”, and I utter it at the risk of causing offense to important folks like Barrak Obama who want to be referred to regressively as “black”). Ho….hummmmmmmmm! Do I ever get tired of all this galactically-stupid bantering about words!

Give it up, Black man. Give up your collective lack of self-esteem for being black and declare yourself ipso facto in the promised land…that place where white folk have always pretty much comfortably existed…where you can refer to them with any word in the world that roughly transmits the message that they are members of a race in which they are never ashamed to be.

I for one don’t give a tinker’s damn if a white, black or yellow person refers to me with any adjective that means they are calling me Caucasian. I’m not “proud” of being Caucasian in lieu of “racially other” because, having read history, I find that most the really bad deeds and mistakes cultures and peoples throughout history–including little incidents like WWI ,WWII, the Holocaust, the Crusades, the burning of witches, the drowning of the Anabaptists—for baptizing their children too late–have all been committed by the predominately white folk on earth. So “pride” is not the cause of my being immune from insult when someone—with the use of any term (including “cracker”, “honkie”,”whitie”, —you name it—the list is long) refers to the fact that I am white.

Now you can not include in such list things like “white trash”, because that’s going beyond calling someone “white”…it’s calling someone “base” or “worthless’ or worse. The term “nigger” says only two things: The speaker is referring to or addressing a member of the black race, and the speaker is an idiot who, simply for the nasty and sadistic pleasure of it is risking getting his throat cut for exercising his right to (stupid) free speech.

Why, then should black (excuse me- African American) citizens be permitted exclusively to own the “N-word” when there is no counter-part “C-Word” whites can call taboo, “fighting words”?

Did you know, parenthetically, that our State and Federal Appellate courts have bought into this non-sense? Take for example the common law crime of simple assault. Most states (including mine, N.C.) have case law (judicial appellate decisional law) holding that there are basically “no words that justify an assault”. This means, if you refer to some stranger in the street as a “bigoted dumb-ass”, he commits an “unjustified and unprovoked” and hence criminal assault on you if he gets mad and hits you.

There are exceptions to that general rule when courts (including NC’s) have ruled that some words are so insulting and provocative that men of ordinary temper and prudence are reasonably unable (hence not required) to resist hitting people who use those words. Included in those “exceptionally-provocative” list of words–which includes one’s mother and her immaculate lingual behavior in regard to the insulter and/or his body parts–is the word “nigger”.

There are cases holding that where a white man calls a black man “nigger”, he has justified the black man’s assaulting him by way of reprisal. That’s not to say the black man may not be sued and held financially responsible for the damages he inflicts in his assault, but it is to say he may be found innocent of any criminal charges because the courts have determined that he need not hold back his fist when a white man he’s just called “cracker” counters his insult with …the N-word.

No, I’m not kidding you. I’m a lawyer. I’ve been on the losing end of this very issue in court (defending a foolish, loose-tongued cracker). In answer to the question in your hopefully-amazed noggin, the answer is “no”. There are no cases in which the courts of our country say it’s justified for a white man to assault a black man because he’s been hurled any epithet which as a bottom line simply means the black man has called the white man…Caucasian.

Look it up in Webster’s unabridged dictionary. The term “nigger” has only one denotation (definition) – it is: “a member of any dark-skinned race”. That’s all, folks!

It doesn’t say there are any implications of any negative nature whatsoever in the term. It means only what it says- It denotes that the person so addressed or designated is a member of a dark-skinned race. It does not mean he is the son of slaves; it does not imply he is unworthy or unclean. It implies only that he is a member of a dark-skinned race. The “connotations” of the word, if any, exist only in the hearts and heads of the black (sorry- again…African American) individuals who ELECT, who CHOOSE to take offense at the use of the word. So I ask you finally, where is the power in the word but in the heart of the man who elects and chooses to feel anger at its utterance? The red-neck ninny who utters the word may hope it hurts its black target, but it’s the black person who

elects to be hurt. In this land you can elect to be free or imprisoned…In this land you can also elect to be hurt or indifferent when you hear someone refer to you with a word that simply means you’re a member of your race.

The minute African Americans DECIDE that there is no harm or insult in words like “nigger” , “nappy”, “jig” (God help me I can’t ..and won’t try to conjure up all the ones I’ve heard–all you crackers and N-word denoted individuals out there know what they are) there will be no harm, and the old power in the “N-Word” will be dead. Only the black can kill it. Some white trash will use the weapon as long as it works.

All those words (“nigger”, “jig”, etc. ) are worthy of the same attention I suggested we pay to the KKK when they come to town and want to parade before us. Don’t go there. Don’t empower them with your attention and energy. That is what they seek and the only thing they seek.

Black people, do likewise: Do not empower the red-necked cracker who calls you “nigger” by …noticing him. Don’t go there. Don’t empower them with your attention and energy. The moment the black man shows the imbecilic white (who would use the word) that the word has no power, the black man will have finally asserted his own equality, and white man (even the imbecilic) will gradually abandon its use. If the word don’t hit, they’d finally quit. (Thanks, Johnnie C.. It wasn’t exactly O.J.’s glove, but it did in fact fit.)

I started out writing about what a small matter this Imus thing was and then proved myself the fool. It wasn’t a small thing. Racial strife in this country is a big big thing. The Imus affair makes this abundantly clear. Racial self-consciousness and poor self-esteem on the part of the black minority is so pathologically extant—a century and a half after the emancipation proclamation, that we’re shocked every time it raises its nappy head.

Truth is, it’s all a matter of self esteem. The white man using any racial epithet is lacking self esteem and is attempting to raise himself by his bigoted bootstraps in the process of lowering his black brother…with a word. By taking offense at the utterance of that word (the N one), the black man, because of his own suffering self esteem, is handing the wounded white man a weapon that only the wounded white man can wield in a hurtful way. The black man with undamaged self esteem, who has no un-expressed sub-conscious misgivings or regrets about being what he genetically is, is insulated—absolutely immune to injury by means of being referred to as what he is.

So what? What have I said with all this detouring from Imus’ words to N-words? I’m afraid it comes down to this: Bigotry is here to stay. There will forever be little people wanting to feel big by making others feel smaller. On both sides of all racial lines. I don’t envision any future where white bigots will ever let loose of the weapons that black bigots continue to GIVE them. I have here, quite conclusively (says I) contended that the power to destroy the power of the “N” word is and remains exclusively in the heart, mind and actions of the African American.

Bigotry is here to stay, but at any moment any individual African American simply decides it, he can instantly demand, seize and possess the same insulation that shields the white man in this society. There is no word a black man can use that causes a white man any substantial pain or misgivings where that word simply accuses the white man of being a white man.

African Americans, African American brothers and sisters, it’s your choice. Join with us whites in simply and forever deciding that a black human being —just as the proverbial rose–by any other name remains the same.

Putting Imus in Perspective

This is certainly no nursery story being wound down to its end. The sky above our globally-warming planet is in fact falling. We are a disturbed and frightened people involved in a war being waged by our leadership under false pretenses. We have peace to establish and an earth to save and we are wasting inordinate time and energies gossiping about who’s going to adopt the orphaned child one of Hefner’s discarded old ho’s and inherit the fortunes she made in the trade.

We’re crucifying the fools among us and letting the diabolically-wicked villains run the world amuck for oil, dollars and for the Rapturous hell of it.

All we need is a change of focus. A redirection and adjustment of attitude. Whites need to realize that blacks need a little more time to muster their self esteem. In the meantime, if we see some of our own white race playing the race card (using the word, “nigger”) let’s beat the black man to the punch and knock the sucker out ourselves. It won’t get us out of trouble in criminal court because that’s a card they only let the black men play. But let’s play it anyway. Let’s do it because we’re not being forced to do it and because it’s the right thing (for us) to do.

Let’s get our legislators to apologize for the slavery thing our great-great grandparents and fathers did. Let’s do that too because we don’t have to. For all you black brothers and sisters out there, whether you’re nappy-headed or straight, please do us non-bigoted white folk and yourselves a favor, and when some cracker uses the n-word, just say back to him—“That’s what I am. So what’s up, white man?” Please do that and you will have done something the red-neck is totally incapable of understanding. You will have risen above him. Turned the other cheek. Disarmed him. I still may slap him silly….and guess what. He won’t understand that either.

Dusty,

Often it is assumed that skin color is the automatic doorway to racial or ethnic discussion. Simply put, black American individuals are expected to know and understand who, what, why, where and when of all issues relative to conditions where blacks are participants yet white Americans are seldom treated the same within the white community. The Imus case is no different and his disgraceful characterization of young women remains the hot-button wasted discussion.

The shameful term which he so comfortably used appeared to me to be a regular part of his demeanor. He was more familiar with that kind of language than I – in truth, I had never before heard the phrase and was surprised like most normal people.

My selected realm of daily activities is not inside a small box of misinformation or degrading slang language. Outside of that arena, I too have to be taught that with which I am unfamiliar. My skin color is not a carte-blanch passageway into all black racial disruptions. My skin color is not a free entrance to “black” issues nor does my skin color restrict me form the remainder of the learning horizon.

Over the years, like many other blacks, I have experienced the strange feeling of being asked about situations where blacks are a part while at the same time, passed over relative to current situations. It is as though blacks are incapable of learning outside the “colored” box. Really now, has time changed?

Personally, my choice of involvement whether reading, writing or simply conversing is attracted by the merits of the issue and not the skin color of the people. What is said is more important than who said it. What is done by a black person is no less important to me if done by white person. A bullet shot from the hand of a black person is no less deadly than one shot from the hand of a white person. To me, crimes by either are equally detestable and unacceptable. Foolishness has no ethnicity.

Over the past forty years we have seen, persons of high elective office, the ministry, business CEOs, personalities and the list goes on, suffer career-ending punishments because of some form of foolishness. Imus is no different.

I have never viewed his foolish show nor listened to his foolish tirades. I am ignorant enough without soliciting more and his skin color plays no part.

My scripture teaches me, “But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart and they defile the man.” Matthew 15:18 – KJV

When wrong has been committed and exposed the perpetrator should be punished and Imus is no different. A career ending infraction is a punishment suffered by ministers, politicians, business leaders and others…Imus is no different

Dusty’s Reply to Al…

Dear Al,

A brief response to your letter has to start with a defensive statement. If I thought I owed you an apology for asking for your opinion partly because you are African American, I’d have begun this reply with that apology. But I don’t. Your words make it clear that you don’t think African Americans are, because of their race, better able to answer questions about race than anyone else. I disagree. I was born to a white family and community with white biases and know a whole lot more about how they express their attitudes about blacks than most all Blacks.

Having said that, I want to remind you that you have written for our DW site before, and every time I—or any one else writes an article therein—you are asked to contribute any comments you care to contribute to our website forum. The website begs everyone to contribute, regardless of political, religious or racial origins or affiliations.

When blacks and whites converse with each other, both are guarded…not because they’re bigoted, but because all words have differential connotations in different racial sub-communities. I wish this were not the case but it is. If you took offense at my asking you to express your opinions about the attitudes and realities of the black community, I am sorry, and saddened. Feel free at any time to ask me about my view of the white sub-culture. I was raised by a grandmother who was raised by descendants of slaves. A grandmother whose parents were slave owners. My grandmother was in fact named “Birdie” by the children of former slaves who never left their (Alabama) plantation and enjoyed my grandmother’s singing (which they taught her) while they picked cotton together in fields they collectively worked after the Civil War.

I myself was raised by a black family (two of them in fact). I have spent a lifetime puzzled and discontent with the racial climate in my country. I will always do everything I can think of to better the situation.

I feel that you felt in my sending you the paper to review that I was seeking the viewpoint of a “token” black, or in any case “marginalizing” you. Not the case. I sent it to you because you’re African American and I respect your opinion. You have insights into the collective mind, vernacular and soul of the black community that I don’t have. Vice-versa with me and the white community.

You and I and the rest of America have a shared community. In this community there is racial strife, like with the cases of Jimmy the Greek and with Imus. I—as you–never paid attention to either of them either, but what happened to each widely affected—and shed light on–our shared community.

I very much appreciated what you said at the end with -

Because of the user’s intention when using the N-word, it is unreasonable to say, “That’s what I am.” To ignore the misguided, yes – to concur with the misguided, Hell No, Never!

I can both see your point, agree with much of it, but the whole truth requires more. Just saying “no” to anyone’s use of the word “nigger” does not end the problem, either with the word or the racial tension that fuels its powerful engine of hatred. Saying “Hell no..Never…insures the empowerment of the word and the bigot who uses it…forever.”

Since you brought in Biblical Scripture as authority for your “No, Never!” remedy for racial slurs, I’m going to finalize my comments to you and our DW readership with my idea of how Jesus would have handled the situation had he found himself in the position of the Rutgers basketball team—having been insulted by the likes of Imus….

                                         THE ANSWER TO THE IMUS

ISSUES IS ALREADY WRITTEN

I am convinced that Jesus gave us the answer. I think if some early-Judean skin head (non Jew) had approached Jesus on his way to Jerusalem and said: “What the fuck you doing on that donkey, you goddamned kike?…You think you’re king or something?” , Jesus would have turned the other cheek. I can imagine the conversation going something like this:

Jesus: “I’m on the way to town and you are welcomed to come with us. And what, might I ask, do you mean in referring to me as “Kike”?

I can see the skinhead pause with that question and shrink back a bit, then after pondering saying possibly,

“A Kike is a fucking Jew, stupid. Where have you been for the past 3 years.”

Jesus: “I’ve been…studying and praying, and doing a little teaching and …ministering. We can both see I am not—as you say—fucking, but I am riding to town with these friends. As for my being a Jew, I find you and I clearly see eye-to-eye in one very important respect. I am, verily a Jew. And a Jew with a following I again invite you to join, if you’d like to come with us to Jerusalem.”

Skinhead: “What the hell for, man? Why on earth should I follow you and your donkey into town today? Those palm leaves there in your path—I can gather them myself.”

Jesus: “Are you willing to do that?”

Skinhead: “What- put palm leaves in front of that donkey…or follow you to J-town.?”

Jesus: “Either one. Choose either one, but in either case, do come with us. We would love to have you come…and be with us.”

Skinhead: “Why should I come with you…a stranger…into a town full of armed soldiers, tax collectors and money lenders”?

Jesus: “In order to be with us and learn more of the magic you have just learned.”

Skinhead: “Magic! What Magic have I just learned?”

Jesus: “The Magic that in your heart just converted me from ‘Kike’ to … ‘stranger’ .”

Skinhead: “How long will we be in Jerusalem?”

Jesus: “As long as it takes to …share the magic.”

FIX THE MIDDLE EAST

By Leonard Carrier
…A Simple Plan
How can we stop the escalating violence in the Middle East? I offer a simple plan that can be implemented by President Bush immediately. I propose that our president tell the Israeli government: (1) to stop its attacks on Lebanon, withdraw its forces, and announce a unilateral cease fire, (2) to lift the siege of Gaza, (3) to apologize for killing civilians in Lebanon and Gaza, (3) to repair damage to the infrastructure Israel has destroyed, (4) to release Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons, (5) to start negotiations immediately to end the occupation of Palestine by removing all the settlements on the West Bank, offering a compromise on the governance of Jerusalem, and discussing proper compensation in lieu of a right of return for those people displaced by the Israeli state. Would such a plan work? Of course it would. All our president has to do is threaten to cut off our annual $2.5 billion tax-funded aid to Israel if does not do these things and instruct our UN representative to propose economic sanctions on Israel, as well. The only reason Israel is pushing the envelope in over-reacting to attacks on Israeli soldiers is that our government has stood on the sidelines and allowed them to do it. Will Hamas and Hezbollah then stop their terror attacks. Of course they will. Once Israel does what our president tells it to do, and the Palestinian state approaches nearer to realization, the militants would be marginalized and the Israeli state would be secure. Why hasn’t our president even considered such a plan, a plan that would put him right up there with Mohandas Ghandi as one of the world’s greatest peace makers? My take on it is that he continues to get very bad advice, and he doesn’t know how to stop following it.

IT WON’T WORK AND…

Do we really want to save what America is becoming?

By: Dusty Schoch

You say: “A Simple Solution”….I say “A Clean Break” and finally I ask: How fired up are you to “save” America?

It makes perfect sense, Len. But the simpler fact is nothing Israel does is done without advance U.S. covert approval. Syria is one of our prime targets in the Armageddon Rapture promised-oil operations manual. Israel’s rockets are now hitting really close to that border. “A Clean Break” is still the covert U.S. policy and Cheney is still implementing Wolfowitz’ plan that executes the Wurmser’s Clean Break.

I’m just about to the point Marlow says Kurtz reached in Heart of Darkness… “Exterminate the Brutes”. Or at least a corollary of it: Let them exterminate each other. Sons of Isaac and Ishmael have been doing this forever. We are allied with Israel and the alliance is clerically and corporately-driven imperialism, one for the honey (as in milk) and two for the dough (oil), three to make ready (Jews+Christians+Corporations) and “go cat (cataclysm) go”.

Evangelical Christians are now openly (turn on your TV) espousing this war as end-time pre-destined Armageddon. It’s Christian/Jewish Zionist Rapture Herrenvolk. Bush is their collective crusading “Captain”. No one’s going to stop this juggernaut unless it’s the clerics…or rather a revolt among the true followers of Islam and Christ. The scariest part of this global clerical insanity is that the Jews and Christian fundies think they can play these end-time games in a pro-active way and Jesus and/or his Father will come and clean up the mess when it’s over. I don’t think the creative writers of Old or New Testament scripture foresaw or factored in the 100,000-year half life of plutonium fallout.

Your proposal is sane and on the money, but totally fairytale. U.S. aid to Israel is given precisely to wage the on-going war with Palestine…and beyond. The vestige of hope (dwindling) I have is still in having the clerics declare peace.http://democratswrite.com/articles_by_democrats/page31.htm

Great dreaming, my friend, but it’s wake-up time. I’ve smelled the coffee. We both, however, need to drink it and get creative. Our country is in the hands of pseudo-Christian crusaders, just as Germany in the late 30’s. Our demagogic exploiter is every bit as crazy as Hitler; every single bit. He has bankrupted our country and ended every major alliance we have save England, and England’s not a major military ally. We’re in deep shit and the only shovel we’re holding is a nuclear button for self-destruction. Our nation today stands as a macro-cosmic Jihad warrior shouting in the Global mall…”Do it my way or it’s Holocaust Highway”. I’m almost to the point of getting philosophic about it. I am (sincerely) looking at property in Panama. I am seriously searching for a 60-foot sea-worthy hull. I am a resident alien. I am salivating for the safety and sanctuary of the open sea.

How long, Len, should we rage against the dying of something? What is left of America? Let’s write about that.

Turn on your TV and read your paper. Please show me something of our society (besides a minority of scattered souls who remember the American dream the way we do) you want to preserve. I think the glorious ride may be over.

A country dies when it’s dreams evaporate. We’re a nation of very ignorant and heedless hedonists. We’ve shipped to other shores our productive and creative labor and work ethic; we’ve exchanged ambition for entitlements; We’ve converted Jesus, Prince of Peace to Christ the crusading Zionist conqueror.

Three decades ago we made the world’s best electric and other appliances, the best cars, furniture , textiles …everything. We now make nothing but weapons of mass destruction, and nuclear WMD’s and delivery capability is our only card to play now in international power games. These uglier-than-even-us Arab sheiks have more power and wealth under their sand than we do because of the new “oil standard” of wealth in this new, hell-bent for eco-armageddon global culture of ours.

All the remaining power-hitters on this dying globe are now moving their mighty military minions to the Middle East as forecast in “The Road Warrior” movie….to secure their share of “the juice”. We’re pretty much, Len, you, I and a dwindling mini-minority, a vanishing species in this country. Watch what the x-generation is generating…It’s all narcissistic warring of all against all. The nightmare scenario we heard about in sociology 101, that converted Rome to ruins.

GWB showed us his colors in his first 4 years and was re-elected (almost). We can’t blame the Supreme Court….enough of us voted for a fascist dictator to take his election to court. He “won”. Blue (thinkers) are now the minority among a burgeoning sea of righteously-ignorant red that swells like earth’s own, and for the same globally-warming reasons.

I’m serious, Len. Let’s write about an issue that might, in the debating, turn things around: What’s left of America worth saving? NASCAR? A porn industry whose annual gross would redeem the national debt in a decade? A population of SUV-driving kiss-my-polar-ice crack heads? A union of evangelical (crazy) Christians and state which has converted the Christian Church to the most dangerous lobby since Exxon/mobile and tobacco? NASSA allied science that concentrates 2 percent studying the heavens and 98 percent on how to more efficiently and accurately decimate earth?

When I was a kid, Len, High Point, my home town, was furniture capitol of the world. More furniture was made within 50 miles of my door than everywhere else in the world. We called our furniture club “The String and Splinter Club” because we were also one of the world’s great textile centers. All my industrial buddies (sons who inherited these industries from their industrious dreaming dads) have sold out. They did it piecemeal (one “line” of products at a time) to lower the profile of their Enronian personal-profit plans. The were finally all “constrained” to do it because it was the only way to compete in the global market. Now I’ve suggested we rename our club the “Lint and Dust” Club.

Corporate-run industry of all kinds has turned cannibal. Corporation gobbling up corporation. Unlimited power at the top sucking the blood of the laboring corpus until the labor languishes and the productive burden is shipped to leaner and hungrier shoulders in sweatshops abroad. Predatory marketing prevails as the new American paradigm. Wallymart fist assassinates Kmart, and then feeds off its own and the life blood of its foreign labor. Wallgreens strategically moves its stores right next door to its competitors in areas that cannot support 2 stores, and the bully thrives and the moms and pops die, and all the City Councils’ young cannibals endorse the process because it’ll expand the tax basis.

TV portrays and emulates the new cannibalism with cut-your-neighbor’s throat celebrations in the so-called “reality” shows, where art is eliminated and the object is –always—screw your neighbor before he screws you. The new “American Idol” is elected in a process whose 98-percent effort is exerted in humiliating the 3000 artistic souls who competed for the “honor”.

Welcome to the war of the worlds, the war of all against all. You can’t choose sides because there are none in reality any more. The corporations ultimately machinating the war in the Middle East are transnational. Money has no borders. Money has no allegiances. Money is naturally akin to the most noxious element on earth…Mercury. Money, like “quick silver” gravitates and adheres to itself. It can molecularly bond with any element and in so doing renders the resulting compound manifold times more toxic than itself. Money like mercury is now in our teeth and brain. It can assume any shape and seep into cracks and crevasses too small for the human eye to detect and interdict.

In a nutshell, here’s what’s happening in the Middle East and nothing simple’s going to alter it:

Two decades ago the world’s biggest bullies, U.S. and Russia saw the Sheiks get out of line, mark up the crude barrels and flex their muscles on the sheer (and correct) conviction that, since there were two nuclear bullies out there, neither would have the balls to take over the milk and honey juice under Arab sand. Afghanistan was the proving ground. That country was targeted by Russia because it could provide a pipeline for importing the juice when and if either power took over the Middle East.

America defeated Russia (and their pipe line pipe dream) in Afghanistan as Communist Russia defeated the U.S. in Viet Nam. Our stinger missiles pretty much did the trick, coupled with our C.I.A. schooling of bin Laden and his Al Qaeda warriors.
That was in 1992. With Russia’s failure, rose American/Israeli combined religious and corporate ambition.

Today there is no real difference between clerical and corporate America, as the wedding of Evangelical Christianity to corporations via the TV broadcast media is now consummated.

Eight years pass during which the Zionist Jews actively preach and teach (via U.S. think tanks, Institutes and Foundations) the methodology in taking over the Middle East, calling it a “re-ordering process”, and this plan was inherent in the “Mein Kamph” of World War Three, which has been under way since 9/11/01. “A Clean Break” is the Mein Kamph of which I speak, and it was tendered to and rejected by a sane Netanyahu in 1998. This new Middle Eastern order was, by Netanyahu seen for what it was, a thinly-veiled plan for U.S. invasion and take-over at the symbiotic instigation of their little Jewish puppet state…Israel.

You could make a case for WW III’s having begun in 1948 with the declaration of Israeli statehood, as every battle for the maintenance of that statehood was fought and won with U.S. Military machinery, training and aid.

England may have been instrumental in the formation of Israel, but America has been wholly responsible for its establishment and maintenance. This reality is not a secret in the Middle East, or anywhere else in the informed world.

But, defense of Israel has never been a “friendly” or selfless undertaking from American standpoint. They are our friends now because they are our only port of unrestricted call in the middle of the alien-Islamics’ oil fields. They are our Kurtz in the heart of Islamic petroleum darkness. At one time, we were the Marlowe’s, conscientiously trying to bring crazy-Kurtz Israel around to quitting its genocidal games with its Arab neighbors. But this was mission impossible from the date of inception (48). You can’t displace Arabs in the heart of Islam with Jews and sit back and say, “It’s a done deal”. The Hatfields and McCoys of the Old Testament will never ever be a done deal.

But that doesn’t militate against the Clean Break plan of Middle Eastern oil take-over. It in fact makes the plan
Doable. It’s the virtual back bone of the plan. So long as Israel is playing its “Fort Apache in the Bronx” game in the heart of petro darkness, there will be turmoil, and where there is warring turmoil, the U.S. will have an excuse to maintain its military allied presence. It takes an I.Q. of at least 60 to master this Middle-Eastern math.

But you must keep your eyes on the doughnut and not the hole. The hole is 9/11, Homeland Security, Saddham, al Qaeda, bin Laden, Hezzbolla, Hamas, Zionism, Rapture, Armageddon and most of all …TERRORISM. The doughnut is oil. The JUICE. The juice is the corporations’ currency and currency is the corporations’ life blood.

From Netanyahu’s rejection of “A Clean Break” in ’98 to the Bush Doctrine of 2001, was only about 3 years.
The war to take over the Middle East needed a pretext, and 9/11 became it. We all know the rest of the story.

The “Bush Doctrine” that “justified” the U.S. invasions sequentially of Afghanistan and then Iraq, was simply an execution of the Wurmser’s Clean Break. It was machinated through the A.E.I. (American Enterprise Institute) and more precisely, via David Frum’s recording of Richard Perle’s dictation of the essential phrase (Bush Doctrine) in GWB’s address to Congress that declared WWIII – That being, that “America would tolerate no nation harboring terrorists”. That doctrine was the carte blanch—and pretext– to invade any country in the world, including all Arab countries, but excluding essentially no sovereign nation. The details are still documented in the July 2003 Vanity Fair.

These “institutes” and “foundations” are funded with the money their shareholders have in stock and other wealth. These institutes (A.E.I., the Wurmsers’ pet Hudson Institute ,P.N.A.C, etc.) hire as their “objective” policy-preaching gurus, and think-tank leaders, old-guard politicians who are re-cycled in and out of corporate and political chairs like Dick Cheney and G.W.B., i.e. in oil-drilling business or oil-refining failure one day and elected politicians the next.

These corporations are running the world and currently waging war to control the juice (oil/energy). Who ever controls the energy controls the wealth. The “hole” is terrorism, WMD’s, assaults by so-called “insurgents” on Israel and American soldiers (actually invaders and internationally criminal occupiers of Iraq and Afghanistan).

In the process of waging their war for the “juice”, and through their virtual control of the media and the fundamental religions in America (now merged with corporations as said before), the corporations have, in classical Orwellian (1984) fashion brainwashed and anesthetized America’s “red” citizens and with fear and repetitions of the “big lies” (WMD’s, wanting to “democratize” Iraq, etc.) have lobotomized a weakling, waning and lazy nation into believing that killing 60,000 civilians (in Iraq and Afghanistan) without provocation can be…for any reason…justified…even rendered “righteous”.

The corporations have succeeded in America in gaining a nation’s endorsement of and participation in unprovoked genocide…for the purpose of securing the juice.

With all the evidence in…that the WMD’s etc. were lies, and the war was in fact “unjust” and for the oil, and that the Vice President’s own corporate boss (Halliburton) was engineering the war for the juice and sale of the juice, we Americans re-elected these criminals.

America has become a criminal fascist nation. We are, alone, waging World War III to secure control of the Middle East. Bush’s little bitch Tony B and his GB soldiers don’t count as a meaningful “sovereign” ally. We have none.

We could stop Israel’s bombing of Palestine and Lebanon instantly (as Len Carrier suggests) simply by threatening to terminate our fiscal support of Israel without which they couldn’t survive, much less wage war. We don’t do this because Israel’s war is necessary for ours to continue. The next target in the “Clean Break” war plan is Syria…and/ or Iran…after which we (and our Bush royal relatives in Saudi Arabia) will own both the juice and the juice pipeline. Then it will be most probable that the proverbial Armageddon manure will hit the Middle Eastern fan…all depending on whether Russia and/or China will let us get away with grabbing the juice without paying a price that can only be calculated on a nuclear-powered calculator.

And in case you haven’t read the papers, Russia and China are already gearing up for their allied response to Corporate America’s (not overly) covert plan to commandeer the juice machine.

The question remains, Len, can you think of any reasons to get fired up about saving a country that would let this sort of thing happen…at best…out of ignorance? If I were young enough to join and participate actively in a physical revolution, I would at least attempt to start a movement whereby the blue states (actually all the intelligent and educated metro areas of America) would secede from the red (the rural, ignorant and religiously right). In effect, the red states, in re-electing Bush were voting to continue America’s evolution from benign democracy to fascistic imperialist. When is it the “right time” to man the life boats when you know you’re sailing on Titanic? Have you checked on property values in Panama? Sailing…anyone?

Dusty
July 18, 2006

LEN’S (BEAUTIFUL) FINAL RESPONSE…
A VOICE OF COURAGE and
A BREATH OF HOPE

Dusty sees the world as it is. I see it as I would like it to be. I think that Dusty would like it to be the way I would like it to be, but he sees no hope of getting there from the way it is. He paints a grim but fairly accurate picture of our present foreign policy: an imperialistic venture fueled by the corrosive combination of greedy corporations, military war-mongers, and fervent Armageddonists. I say fairly accurate because I don’t think that we’re calling the shots with these present Israeli military ventures. The United States and Israel have different interests. It just so happens that these interests now coincide. We want a strong military ally in the Middle East as a counterweight to Syria and Iran so we can grab the oil; and they want us to stand aside so they can complete their takeover of the rest of Palestine. In both our countries the hard-liners have taken over, and we’re now at their mercy. So my simple plan is really not one I expect Bush to implement. He’s too far gone down the wrong path.
But that doesn’t mean we should give up pointing out the right path–although my preference would be Paris over Panama if it ever came to that–because I think our country is worth fighting for. I used to say that we get the government we deserve, but then a friend reminded me that I’m not getting the government I deserve, and Dusty is not getting the government he deserves, and there are lots of Israelis who aren’t getting the government they deserve, either. So what do we do about it? I say we keep reminding people that we’ve gone through bleaker periods in our history–like the Great Depression and World War II–and we’ve come out of them. We should keep insisting that our Constitution says that our the government is constituted “of the people, by the people, and for the people,” with no mention at all of big business. We keep exposing the corruption and the war-profiteering of corporations; we tell the Bible-thumpers to get out of politics and get back in their churches and synagogues; we refuse to be called “anti-Semitic” when we point out the immoral actions of the Israeli government; we keep reminding our elected officials that they are supposed to be serving us and not themselves and their fat-cat cronies. And when these officials don’t listen, we set up a hue and cry and drive them from office.
Right now the militarists, the fat-cats, the hegemonists, the pious religionists, and the smug Wall Street types have the upper hand. But remember that it’s always supposed to be darkest before dawn. Winston Churchill said it best: never give up–never, never, never, never.
– Len Carrier

Dusty, Signing Off…

Thanks, Len for the breath of courage and fresh air. At Valley Forge I’d have been the shivering boy just about to sneak away back to his Shenandoah valley home, and you’d have been….Well, Thanks, General. I’ll try and bundle up and keep watch another fortnight. But I have to say, you’ve got me thinking about Paris…that thought may keep me warm these nightmarishly bleak nights.

(Our foreign policy editor, Dusty Schoch reacts to the hullabaloo we’re currently enjoying with Bush’s “smart” bombing, and killing Al Qaeda leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.)

As Bush puts on his Alfred E. Newman face and struts his macho pride taking credit for some dumb soldier’s pushing the button sending two very smart bombs to finish the job his Jordanian oil buddies did when they ratted out their black sheep cousin, so many things come to mind…such as “Lighting matches in haystacks”, “Wagging the Dog”, “Awakening Sleeping Giants”, “Fulfilling Prophesies”, “Born and Bred in the Briar Patch”.

To begin my ruminations on this diplomatic/foreign policy being packaged as “a killing blow in Bush’s so-called “war on terrorism”, let me begin by reprising the absolute first thing I wrote on the subject of Bush’s declared “War On Terrorism” in his address to Congress following 911…you remember, where he declared that there was a war on terrorism being declared and that we’d win it, and that we’d win it by holding responsible those nations “harboring terrorists”. This is, of course, the historically unparalleled declaration of war by a U.S. President on a tactic. Infamy will record it as “The Bush Doctrine”.

Yes, you read that correctly. Of course it makes no more sense today than when Bush (at the dictation of Richard Perle and the speech writing of David Frum) finally declared preemptive war on Afghanistan…against “the terrorists”, the “al Qaeda”, and its Taliban enablers.

Terrorism, fellow Americans, is a tactic…not an enemy. The Sunni Muslim al Qaeda thug Bush just bumped off was not the mastermind of the 911 attack on New York. He’s a Jordanian-born Muslim demagogue, who–just as bin Laden–rose to power among the “insurgents” in Iraq, and Afghanistan. “Insurgents” are simply those who have risen up and banded to oppose, in the name of Islam and their own sovereign nations, Bush’s unjustified and unprovoked “shock and awe” imperialistic preemptive wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The total absurdity of declaring and waging a “war against terrorism” was something I tried to depict in a parable I penned, a little “Persian Parable” shortly after 9/11/01: It went like this:

“Matches and Haystacks”

(An Arabian Allegory)

Let’s consider two combatants contemplating war against one another and make a wager on which will be victorious before their war begins (“victorious” meaning : “to get the outcome the combatant wants in the war”).

On one side are the “haystacks.” They are the common-variety haystacks, made of golden harvested grass, pitched high in a pile , shining in the sun. These haystacks want to endure , intact, until their destinies are fulfilled by deployment into the service of their makers. On the other side are the “matches” – all of them the self-igniting stick variety, having the general size , shape and aspect of large needles without eyes.

The ultimate purpose of all the matches is to set fire to all the haystacks. The easiest way to accomplish this is for the matches to imbed themselves deep inside the haystacks , where, because of their small size and the haystacks’ greater mass , it is easy for them to remain hidden until the call for ignition. When the call to ignite is given by the leaders of the matches, all the matches in all the haystacks will strike themselves and go up in flames along with their individual haystack hosts. Being thusly consumed , however, is no defeat or problem for the matches, who are all trained by masterful match mentors to believe that when they are immolated in a haystack fire they themselves start, they will be instantly transported – intact and unscathed into an after life where they’ll be safe and happy forever - that being , cushioned amidst the churlish labia and securely-clenched teeth of an aspiring cinema cowboy , sitting on a subservient bale of hay in the non-smoking section of a sushi bar in lower L.A. watching CNN and waiting for a Hollywood talent agent to phone.

Now for the wager: When all the matches in the world are safely and securely ensconced in all the haystacks in the world, and the haystacks declare war on the matches and threaten to seek them out and set them on fire, tell me , where are you going to place your bets?

Well, we know where we put our bets…We bet on Bush…and what did we get? We managed to ignite a bunch of haystacks all over Islam. This is the first one we’ve truly burned, though, and this is what’s so important and dreadful about it. Bin Laden’s still at large. We haven’t made a martyr of him yet. We, as yet, haven’t executed Saddam Hussein (although he’s Sunni and despicable, he’s not Al Qaeda) but probably will very shortly by flimsy proxy. No, this is the first Islamic terrorist whose power we have expanded one thousand fold by….of course…killing him. We were all told the story of B’r Rabbit and the Briar Patch, but apparently none of us, especially Bush, learned it. Smart bombing Abu to smithereens has made him a martyr in the Al Qaeda cause. Sending him to Allah. Putting him on the 50 couches with as many virgins. Fulfilling Islamic prophesy. All prophets and martyrs are exponentially more powerful after death than during life. Consider no further than Christ and his Al Qaeda counterpart, Mohammed.

Does Bush really think…Is there any Middle Eastern foreign policy expert stupid enough to advise him that killing a given Islamic leader does anything but bring in…immediately…fresh “insurgent” blood? Does anyone in the West still maintain that the 9/11 pilots were “cowards”? Does anyone with a fifth-grader’s appreciation for Islamic theocracy think that terrorists can be intimidated? Did our “Shock and Awe” bombardment of Baghdad cause terrorists to flee under any construction of recent history? Hell no. It made foreign (Abu was Jordanian) terrorists immigrate to Iraq and join the “insurgency”….it made Abu “sit up”.

“Awakening a Sleeping Giant”,

Instead of celebrating our “kill”, my fellow Americans, I suggest we, for the first time, turn the homeland security “terrorist” light from green to dark red. We have finally gone and stepped on a potential Persian land mine. It brings to my mind those famous words from an intelligent and prescient Japanese warrior (Admiral Yamamoto) on the morning after his Emperor commanded the bombing of Pearl Harbor … “I fear Japan may have awakened a sleeping giant.”

There are an estimated 5 to 8 million Islamics presently residing in the United States an unknowable number of whom are sympathetic to Al Qaeda “type” terrorism. Among these 5 to 8 million of our fellow Americans—without any doubt—reside a very lethal number of Islamic “matches” within our uniformly haystack-vulnerable communities. If, by way of reprisal for Abu’s killing, a squad of Islamic terrorists decides to car-bomb our local Court House or churches, there is absolutely nothing we will be able to do to stop it …at least every time.

“Wagging the (dead) Dog”

If you missed the 1997 movie, “Wag The Dog”, don’t miss the lesson. It tells the story (and political strategy) whereby a U.S. President, embarrassed with a public scandal that could kill his approval ratings, declares war against an innocent and defenseless foreign country to take the media “heat” off himself. Bush’s approval ratings are as low as Nixon’s Watergate numbers because of the dismal ways he’s running every one of his foreign and domestic projects, from Democratizing Iraq to bankrupting what was, before his administration, the strongest national economy in the world.

Let’s not go for the bait. Sit down, Abu, and wag your tail in Islamic heaven where it belongs. Don’t let us wag you down here in the dirt and in the process distract America from the fact that, even if he has a soldier under his command who can make a lucky shot on an inside tip, Bush has declared a disastrous and fictitious war against a non-entity “tactic”, and put America on an impossible mission where, at best, we are giving aid to our Islamic enemies, fulfilling their prophesies that we infidels intend to kill them all, and in the process are making martyrs out of Islamic demagogues more stupid, evil and fascistic even than our own G.W. Bush.

Abu is in fact dead. One match, however, when struck properly, could ignite the whole hay stack. The amber waves of America. So, for those of you who are swallowing the bait, go ahead and celebrate the killing of Abu. But while you straws in the western haystack are celebrating the immolation of one Iraqi match, what are you going to do with the millions of mad matches in your own hayseed midst?

Wake up people. We were lied to. The biggest lie of all is Bush’s claim that the duration of our occupation has come as an unforeseeable surprise. It’s the biggest and the subtlest of the entire pack of neo-con lies told about the war in Iraq. Bush and the authors of the original plan of war planned from the start never to leave Iraq…at least so long as the oil holds out. We’re already back to 80 percent pre-war production levels. “No Exit” was the plan from the go-street intersection of “Shock and Awe”. Make no mistake about it(!)

Iraq was simply the first conquest named in the joint Israeli/U.S. plan to establish a new Middle Eastern order. Read about it in”A Clean Break”–the 1997 plan co-authored by David and Meyrev Wurmser, (Hudson Institute operatives, PNAC and A.E.I. and Pentagon insiders instrumental in executing the neo-con coup of the Pentagon detailed in Sam Tannenhaus’s July 2003, Vanity Fair expose’) incorporated in the PNAC manifesto (so-called “Statement of Principles” on the PNAC website). We entered Iraq without an exit strategy not because we were stupid or our intelligence was bad. All we NEED do is read the Downing Street memo and “A Clean Break” (research them! Google them!) to see the intelligence Bush had was clear and certain: no Iraq/9/11 connections, no WMD’s , and there COULD NEVER BE AN EXIT FROM IRAQ. Ike knew it; Bush’s father SAID it; and GW Bush certainly knew it because his father, among many others, told him. The very non-existence of an exit strategy guarantees America 20 percent of Arabian reserves forever… or at least until Halliburton freezes over.

In previous months there were problems in arranging for a “constitutional congress” to actually become a U.S.-appointed caucus. Next month there’ll be further delays in drafting the constitution these non-elected delegates will forge as straw-men for their neo-con U.S. partners in oil. After that, there will be delays in U.S. military departure because, somehow, things just won’t be getting peaceful over there–while an Islamic people are held captive by Western infidels in their holy land–Go figure. The foreign-policy math here is not challenging. The insurgency will continue as long is there is a marketable flow of oil, because, as long as there is a marketable flow of oil, we (Halliburton and Halliburton customers- you and I) will be there pumping it.

Did you read it in the news today (August 1, 2005) about the U.S. Soldier that suburb of Baghdad is already calling “Sheik” (for his skill in garnering local help in ferreting out insurgents)? And the U.S. public is supposed to believe its government has an exit plan? We’re digging in deeper and deeper in Arabia’s oily oasis. We’re getting accustomed to being tent dwellers. We’re now putting on robes and turbans. Britain’s Lawrence of Arabia clearly had no patent on either Machiavellian stealth or desert détente. If war’s a great teacher of history as they say, oil apparently supplies an equally adequate source of ink for recording it.

Hello! If you think we keep troops in Iraq to save lives from “insurgents”, ask yourself why Bush said no when the Senate asked for troops to fight genocidal terrorism in Sudan (mounting death toll 400,000). “No Exit” was flashing over Baghdad’s door the day we entered. We knew that American/English occupation of Iraq would be bloody and protracted. Bush and Rumsfeld’s principal miscalculation was in underestimating the quantity of troops it takes to maintain the bloody standoff with the insurgents we’d certainly muster in retaliation for our invasion. If we could have sustained the occupation of Iraq with 50,000 troops instead of three times that, we’d already be taking over Syria and/or Iran, which are certainly next in line-at least if the neo-con Christian and pro-Israeli Zionists intent on waging their combined Herrenvolk wars of “End-Time Rapture” and Zionist Armegeddon win again in 2008.

A U.S. Congressman yesterday suggested (“hypothetically”) that bombing Mecca might provide the proper response to the next act of Islamic terrorism on U.S. turf. Rebecca, the female bartender in TV’s sitcom, “Cheers” said something humorously self-deprecating after a blunder of galactic proportions…and it’s somehow the only thing that comes to mind in the wake of Tom Tancredo’s hint of declaring war on Islam (as opposed to a war on Fundamentalist Islamic Terrorists, which constitute probably less than 1 percent of trans-Global Islam). Tommy T, I think Rebecca’s auto-erratic refrain might be a natural for your adoption and chanting at least once a day in the mirror for as long as you live. So, repeat after me…. ” I am toooo stoooopid to live”.

My good American friends, until we read the Downing Street Memo, “A Clean Break”, the PNAC manifesto (entitled “Statement of Principles”) and understand how the PNAC and A.E.I. control Bush and the Pentagon, we are far too ill-informed to form an opinion, much less vote.

We need to wake up and quit being deceived by this “war on terrorism” Bush declared nearly four years ago. Next year, it will have out-lasted WWII. As of today (August 3, 2005) 1,800 Americans are killed; over 43,000 have been seriously injured, mentally and/or physically; we have slaughtered 113,000 civilians (we know of) and we can’t prove we’ve killed a single individual involved in 9/11. “All gave some…Some gave all” applies to all our wars and our beloved warriors. But until we wake up, our children are over there heroically, tragically and needlessly dying. Blood and oil are not an even trade.

October 31, 2001

Dear you all,

Please pardon the form letter but it’s for a good reason. I’ve gotten more and more uncomfortable about the 9/11 thing and the direction we’re headed, and probably like you, am feeling fairly powerless. But, despite the fact we (you and I) have little to say and do to affect the way things are going in and outside the U.S. now, we’re not powerless to help each other sift through the media morass and political posturing to maintain a sense of sane circumspection, involvement and , to varying degrees, control.

Recently it occurred to me I have a lot of very smart and resourceful friends with access to the net, and it dawned on me that if we pooled our individual networks into an expanded network and unofficial clearing house/think tank, we could help keep each other much more in touch with important facts and ideas as they develop.

Soon after the 9/11 thing happened , several of you (thanks) started sending me great resource material on bin Laden (how the C.I.A. helped create him ,etc.) and this material came to me long before it got to the media. I ‘ve personally gotten fairly immersed , and even fascinated in a fear-driven sort of way, in Islamic terrorism and the challenge it presents to the U.S. military (and us). Have you noticed yet what a great “geography lesson” war turns out to be?

It’s very unsettling to think as I presently do that we may be headed in exactly the wrong direction if we are planing to attack the problem of Islamic terrorism primarily with aircraft carriers, smart bombs and the rest. Russians already tried that in the same place we’re headed and the same elements and weaponry that routed them are still in place; we put them there and we trained the lot we’re now resolved to destroy. We can easily eliminate their conventional war assets , but we’re being challenged (i.e , killed) by their non-conventional ones.

I’m going to attach to this letter, for flavor and incentive, a short allegory (titled “Matches and Haystacks”) concerning the attack on the twin towers and Islamic terrorism in general. It doesn’t teach or solve anything, but through it I can bring into focus and share with you some of what we are all currently feeling as we’re being told we may have anthrax and otherunthinkable dangers in our midst for the first time since 1942.

If you’ve gotten this letter it’s because I know you’re well-informed , intelligent and likely keeping in touch these days with others of your ilk , all of which makes you desirable candidates for enlistment in the group I’m helping to form. This group would like to be better connected to your informational network and your thinking while this terror thing is pending . So, what I ask is that , after you’ve read this letter and the little “Persian Parable” attached, you correspond with me by e-mail on the following:

Would you be interested in being a member of a locally-based “think tank”, the purpose of which would be simply to provide for each other a sharing network (mostly through e-mail) and clearing-house for information and collective creative/ameliorative thinking (including hopefully reliable, collectively-gathered information on threats of and defenses to bioterrorism as it evolves)?

I can already tell you I’m in communication with some “heavies” in the U.S. and elsewhere, have chased down stories released by the foreign press, and have corresponded with Jessica Stern (author of the book on Islamic terrorism, “The Ultimate Terrorists”). She and many other of the real eggheads on the subject are swearing (very quietly) that Bush and Powell may be executing an ineffective , and possibly even counter-productive plan of attack at present. While the jury is still out, would you like to network with us (I’m volunteering to be your clearing-house) under the unofficial banner of “B.E.A.” ? A core group has already enlisted and agreed to adopt that moniker , and is constituted and defined as follows: “An a-political Society of trial lawyers and their lay and professional colleagues and friends who collectively embody a pro-bono think tank to provide for each other a clearing house for information and ideas intended to help the members contend with and think positively, constructively and perhaps eventually even remedially about Islamic-based terrorism in the U.S. and elsewhere.” (“B.E.A.”, of course , is “Barristers et. al”.)

The group will have no corporate charter, no board , no CEO or committee chairs. If we ever assemble outside cyber-space, our meeting table will be round. I have volunteered for the job of scribe, and as such will receive, collate and send information ad-hoc from those who join and contribute. I don’t intend to flood or be flooded with massive e-mail because both I and member contributors will conservatively screen out unreliable, redundant or otherwise superfluous material. All your contributions will be strictly voluntary , so you can send and/or receive information at the whim and motion of your mind and mouse.

The core group will include, inter alia, some creative fellow lawyers in the Triad and D.C., a few doctors, University professors (so far, including Harvard, Wake Forrest, U.N.C. , V.C.U. and Notre Dame) (and students), scientists (in private sector), community leaders, along with scholars learned in matters of Islamic/Middle Eastern culture and politics. When our group is full and in swing, we’ll ask Senators John Edwards and Dick Lugar (R. Ind.) to join our ranks as political adjuncts already immersed , respectively, in terrorist-related domestic and foreign policy positions. In turn , it is hoped that these core members will each bring into our clearing house base, information gleaned (and screened) from their individual nets, so that we develop a net which has the capacity to expand exponentially in function and at the same time remain static in its core size. To keep things manageable , I’m putting an arbitrary limit of 24 on our core membership, and will consider your early suggestions for individuals you think would be a willing asset to the core base. Keep in mind , when you enlist, you’ll be able to share B.E.A. communications and data with anyone in your e-mail bank, B.E.A. member or not (you could constitute them a “group” in your e-address books. ) There will be B.E.A.’s , then and “A-BEAS” , viz., a “friend” (amicus) of the BEA’s.

Anyone who gives me a “yes” will immediately begin getting (via e-mail) access options to anything I receive that’s novel among stuff that comes to me over the net either from you or through the web and other media. You’re never obligated to read or respond. You’ll simply be invited to express to and through me your select creative thinking about how you personally endorse or second-guess decisions being made by world leaders in the new war on terrorism (and/or the terrorists’ war on us). Your thoughts “outside the box” especially are sought.

At the least, membership in “the B.E.A.’s” (to be pronounced, appropriately, just like the “Bees” in “busy bees”) will keep you better informed with avante-guard aspects and angles of our war with the terrorists; and at best, we might collectively come up with some ideas that might somehow help out in the situation out …there. You can come in now with a “yes” reply and bail out anytime down the road for any reason. If you sign in, however, include in one short sentence the “bio” note we’ll be authorized to place beside your name in our (not-to-be-published, except intramurally ) membership roster..

I’ll serve , as I said , as clearing-house clerk, or group “Scribe” so that when you send me stuff, you will have screened it and you’ll have sent it to me with a preface giving a brief synopsis on content. I’ll make sure to evaluate whether the piece you send me is redundant in re: stuff previously sent. I’ll send (i.e. disseminate to other core members) , then, select of your “outside source” contributions, and all of your independent thinking and creations, uncensored and unedited.

Please join the B.E.A.’s and get back to me on it ASAP. E Pluribus Unum really is the truth, especially when you’re under attack, and as I ‘m presently feeling – a little jittery.

“Matches and Haystacks”

( An Arabian Allegory )

Let’s consider two combatants contemplating war against one another and make a wager on which will be victorious before their war begins (“victorious” meaning : “to get the outcome the combatant wants in the war”.)

Being thusly consumed , however, is no defeat or problem for the matches, who are all trained by masterful match mentors to believe that when they are immolated in a haystack fire they themselves start, they will be instantly transported – intact and unscathed into an after life where they’ll be safe and happy forever – that being , cushioned amidst the churlish labia and securely-clenched teeth of an aspiring cinema cowboy , sitting on a subservient bale of hay in the non-smoking section of a sushi bar in lower L.A. watching CNN and waiting for a Hollywood talent agent to phone.

Now for the wager: When all the matches in the world are safely and securely ensconced in all the haystacks in the world, and the haystacks declare war on the matches and threaten to seek them out and set them on fire, tell me , where are you going to place your bets?
